The title is a light-hearted joke - the essay is an humorous look at the power of hormones. I wasn’t sure what forum to post it in, so I hope I picked the right one. :o
As my wife and I sat on the couch one night this past winter, reading and half-watching the inevitable HGTV, I started sweating hard and my face got so fevered and flushed that I felt as if I were peering into an oven.
I turned to Deb and said, “Man, I’m having a wicked hot flash.” And she said, “Me, too.” Then we laughed. You laugh a lot — unless your hormones are making you cry — when you’re having menopause with your wife.
I was in the middle of treatment for an aggressive case of prostate cancer last winter, and it included a six-month course of hormone therapy. My Lupron shots suppressed testosterone, which is the fuel for prostate cancer.
When your testosterone is being throttled, there are bound to be side effects. So, with the help of Lupron, I spent a few months aboard the Good Ship Menopause with all the physical baggage that entails. It’s a trip that most men don’t expect to take.

Why are you a “fallen away catholic”? Are you an athius now?😊😊

Thanks for sharing that! hormones are so powerful that, like everything else, the benefits have to outweigh the risks for me to take them. But the light-hearted look, that’s cute.

Dale, are you going through something similar to what the author has written?

that’s very interesting and thank you for sharing…Never thought I would hear a man having to take hormonal treatments…Kind of helps them see what women go through and perhaps helps them undestand things better… Thanks for sharing! God bless…

I am taking Proscar, which helps block testosterone in order to tame an unruly prostate. But its nowhere near as powerful as Lupron - I haven’t had hot flashes, nor cancer, thank goodness. On the other hand, I do think the Proscar has made me mellower, less confrontational, and maybe even happier. Its amazing to me how hormones affects one’s thoughts and feelings.

Nope, not an atheist. I just lost my faith that the Holy Spirit guides the Catholic Church. I’m still puzzling (months later) over why that happened. But my faith in God is as strong as ever.

*Interesting thread, Dale. I also never knew that insulin is a hormone, so when we ladies eat chocolate, and the insulin is being excreted, and mixing with other hormones that are secreted during various ‘times’ of the month, it can be very unhealthy, to say the least. It’s not in a woman’s mind, that is for sure! :o

Just curious–“what” do you feel guides the Catholic Church, then, if not the Holy Spirit?*

… so when we ladies eat chocolate, and the insulin is being excreted, and mixing with other hormones that are secreted during various ‘times’ of the month, it can be very unhealthy…
Heresy! Heresy! (I feel compelled to defend my faith in chocolate.😉 Sorry if my outburst here offended anyone of a different faith.)

While our culture maintains that it’s females who are ‘victims’ of our biology, I would have thought that few things are more blindingly obvious than that the sex most dominated by hormonal mood swing is male!

The difference is that female mood swings are seen as entirely negative and best cured with jokes or a good dose of patronizing, while male mood swings are, with younger males, ‘just boys being boys’ (a condition that can continue into old age) or, with more sensitive men, a kind of poetic existential angst which, later in life, may transform itself into an entirely understandable ‘mid-life crisis’ and a compelling need to get a sports car and/or a trophy wife.

That’s great he gets to experience hot flashes so he knows what women go through. Now if he just goes through pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeds he might get the rest of the picture…

That is what I was just thinking. Living under the influence of testosterone is no walk in the park. 😛 All you have to do is just look at all the lad mags, porn, and infidelity to see which sex is more of a prisoner to their hormones.

Oh, I think you are right. All the violence and reckless, stupid behavior of guys between the ages of 15 - 25 is probably spurred on by the raging testosterone levels of those years. Thankfully for them (and society), the male testosterone level drops after that period.

A double standard for men and women as to hormone effects? Well, I suppose it wouldn’t be the first double standard for the two sexes.

I think the author already has had more than his fill, but the point is a good one. :o

I guess I see the Catholic Church as I do other religions - a sincere response to God’s presence in our lives. But I certainly respect the beliefs of those who have more faith than I.

Let me drop in here, I am not catholic but I think isn’t the holy spirit suppose to be guiding the pope and not the catholic church as a whole?
Humans are prone to corruption; such as priest, vicars e.c.t.
But I have seen no corruption in the popes words.
