sigh Where to start?

My brother and his wife divorced, and I tried to be supportive to him. He told us all that his wife had seemingly gone nuts and was out clubbing, bringing home strange men after she kicked him out of the house, hiding money from him, etc…

After most of the bad stuff had seemingly settled down, and they started to get agreements in place about kids, house, money and all that, my brother contacted an old girlfriend and started seeing her again. He knew that I thought he shouldn’t be dating (or his ex either) and should be focusing on getting his kids through the terrible time they were living through. But I didn’t harp about it. However, he insisted on talking about this girlfriend, and I was politely non-committal, basically saying, “how nice for you” or “that’s good” while he went on about the relationship. I tried really hard to just shut up and not start expounding all my own opinions on the matter. (Those of you who are familiar with my posts will know how extremely difficult I found that!) But then he told me he was going to the next state over (where she lived) for 8 days to visit her. I thought that was a really long time, and asked him if it was not his weekend to have the kids, thinking that would be why he has that much time available. He said, no, he was supposed to have the kids, but he would be missing “only one weekend” with them to go on this visit. Well, I couldn’t hold it in any longer, and said, “See, this is why I think you shouldn’t be dating!” And he asked what I meant, and I said, “You are already putting this relationship above the one with your kids!” He asked how he was doing that, and I said that he only got two weekends a month with his kids, and he was throwing one away to go see a girlfriend. He hung up on me and we haven’t spoken since.

Well, now, fast forward. Last Christmas, I sent him a potted cactus garden (guy alternative to flowers) and a note trying to patch things up. I even apologized for saying what I did and promised to keep my mouth shut in the future. I still don’t think what I said was wrong, and I think I really did try to not go off on him without reasonable cause, but I thought perhaps I could patch up the family if I said it. No dice. I told him in the note that I wanted our kids to know each other. They are the only cousins any of them have or ever will. DH and I both come from families of only 2 kids, and his brother has decided not to have any. Also, I don’t want my dad to have to schedule family visits around our fight. I would like to think we could all at least be civil.

Anyway, now I find out through the family grapevine that he has moved his girlfriend into his home. So when the kids come on their visitation, they don’t get time with their dad, they have to share him with his girlfriend. Everyone says they seem to like her, even my brother’s ex, but what choice do they have? Having lived through that kind of stuff myself, I remember the feeling of having to at least act like you liked Dad’s girlfriend if you wanted to have unimpeded access to him. My brother hated sharing our dad with his girlfriends, a fact of which I tried to remind him… but he would not listen. Anyway, last week my brother got carbon monoxide poisoning at work and spent a night in the hospital. The only reason I know about it at all was that he called my dad while my dad was at my house.

I do not want the next time I speak to my brother to be at his funeral. He does work in a dangerous job. But I don’t know what to do. I have apologized for something I don’t even think was wrong, I have offered to just shut up and grin in future. But he still will not speak to me. Another thing that’s odd is that his ex called me about a week ago, and she sounded so rational. I am wondering now how much of what we were told about her during the divorce was true. My brother has a history of lying to make himself look better and of blaming all his problems on other people. I live over an hour away and was not personally witnessing any of the events, so I have no idea what to think.

I think I want to patch things up. My brother and I were close as young children, and it hurts to lose that. But then I think maybe it’s better this way, because I don’t have to keep trying to be polite about his immoral choices (or explaining them to my kids), and he doesn’t have to deal with the fact that he knows I don’t approve even if I don’t say anything.

Perhaps I should regard him like my former best friend. We just grew up at different times and in different directions and became totally incompatible. And anyway, the ball is in his court. I have offered what I can. I don’t even know his phone number, as he moved, and I heard he will probably move again soon. I think I still have the right e-mail, but I don’t know for sure.

Should I keep trying to contact him? Should I let sleeping dogs lie? Should I just stop worrying about it and wait for him to make a move? 🤷

Doesn’t seem like there’s a point in continuing to make an issue of it. He knows where you stand and why, and you are both adults. You can continue to send cards, etc as you normally would do anyway. If he doesn’t respond, then shrug well, you are just showing your love for him as your brother, expecting nothing in return, but hoping for a better relationship.

I don’t even see that you did anything wrong in the first place. But for heaven’s sake don’t “worry”…it does no good anyway.
🙂

Blessings,

Keep him in your prayers and let him resume the relationship when he wants to. You’ve apologized (and I don’t think you were in the wrong) and did the generous thing. I’d see if you can have a relationship with your nieces and nephews through his wife.

The only thing that has me confused is that the custody settlement lets him have a person of the opposite sex living with him while his kids come over on weekends. Are the kids not even spending the night? If that is the case, I highly doubt his ex was acting as crazy as your brother said. If she was and he was able to get some kind of proof, I think he would have gotten more custody.

Anyway, that doesn’t have to be answered, it just popped into my head as I was reading your post.

HTH!

Well, as cohabitation is now totally normal to most people and seen as no particular moral threat to children, the family courts don’t place restrictions on visitation because of it. Unless the person is a registered sex offender, I don’t think the courts care. I have heard of cases where a parent will have a convicted felon for a boy/girlfrirend, and the other parent can’t get restrictions placed on visitation or a requirement that that person not stay over when the kids are there. It’s sick. Especially in light of all the cases where cohabiting boyfriends or girlfriends abuse children, usually horrifically, sometimes to death… 😦

it has been my experience that when someone asks your opinion on a morally or ethically problematic question, and you give an honest answer, they will go ahead and justify doing exactly what they intend to do, get angry with you, and blame you for their anger. Angry people almost always react that way when they know you are right and they are wrong. That is no help, I realize, but hope it prevents you from beating yourself up about this.

I would rather witness to Muslim extremists or man-eating heathens than to my own family.

That’s awful. One of the guys at my work is dating someone who is divorced with a little girl. She and her ex share custody but neither of them are allowed to have someone of the opposite sex move in unless they are married. I thought that was a great stipulation, but I guess it doesn’t happen all the time.

I regret to admit that this statement is also true for me. 😦

Hang in there, DuskyJewel, I am estranged from my sister. (Well actually, my sister is now estranged from the entire family, including my Mom.) I know how it feels.

Remember what Love truly is- it is wanting what is best for the other person and doing whatever you can do to help him get it.

What is best for your brother is to act in a way that’s in accordance with God’s law. That’s what’s best for all of us. What you describe him doing in regards to this woman and his children is not keeping that law. Love means wanting him to follow God’s plan for chastity, sexual purity, and headship of what’s left of his family- but clearly your brother doesn’t want you to help him get it, as he doesn’t want this for himself.

Right now, the best thing you can do for yourself and your brother is to pray for a conversion of the heart, for healing, and for peace. You’ve made your offering- he’s not ready to take it. Maybe the prayers you offer up today will help him years later finally soften his heart towards you and God.

Ain’t that the ever-lovin’ truth?!

I do pray often for all the lapsed Catholics in my family, and there are many. Guess that’s all I can do.

Dusky, I am so sorry your brother isn’t talking to you. I know exactly what it feels like for slightly different reasons. Especially the part about your kids not being able to see their cousins 😦 I really believe that family, no matter how difficult, should be together. As long as nobody is abusive. I think you did such a wonderful thing sending the cactus. Sounds like he is too embarassed to talk to you because he now has his gf living with him. I really hope things will improve and you can be in contact again.

Oh, Hon. :console: I went through a time where my siblings also didn’t like what I said about their moral choices, and they knew where I stood before they even engaged in the behavior and asked me for my opinion/blessing. I was very nice about it. I delivered my opinion in the form of concern for them, and I mentioned my hurt feelings through tears. They still got angry with me.

After nearly 4 years (jeepers, has it been that long already?), I’m finally starting to feel close to my brother again. My relationship with my sister has been strained for only about 2 years, and we’re working on it. With my brother, I just had to give him time, and slowly work my way back into his life on Christmases, when the whole family got together. Now, I see him once a month, sometimes more, but that was after 4 years of emotional separation.

It’s hard. Especially when you’ve shared a close childhood. I hope your brother doesn’t take as long as mine did. It really hurts, I know.

Dusky, I’m sorry you’re going through this. It’s not easy to want to be closer to a family member but be rejected.

My only siblings are my two brothers and the older of the two is not close to any of our family. We’re not estranged and we’ve never fought. We haven’t lived in the same community since he finished high school since I both he and my husband had jobs that saw them moved around a lot. I’m always thrilled to see him but he couldn’t care less about seeing any of us ever again. We speak once or twice a year (Christmas and New Year if he’s not working). He even avoided visiting Dad for several years until Dad was at death’s door.

It’s not easy but don’t give up, keep sending those cards and acknowledging special occasions. You’ll feel better doing so and it will show him that the lines of communication are still open.

:hug1: Having genuine relatives who are themselves too much, I understand. What I would do, given you have given a lot of background here:
  • Start developing a relationship with his ex. I am sure she would love to let you see the kids.
  • I am finding that, in situations where the sib in question is not speaking to me, at family gatherings, SAY HI ANYWAY. If they turn their nose at you and ignore you, fine. You haven’t lost much.
  • And do show up for any family activiities you can, if it isn’t going to be too nutso or too expensive. Remember, not everybody in your family is a crackpot, it just seems that way;).
  • If you used to send him a birthday card, Christmas card, whatever, don’t stop.
  • Keep praying for him.
