Hello all. My brother started to date a girl about 7 months ago. He is Catholic and she is non-denominational. They are constantly saying " I love you" to each other. That makes me believe that marriage could happen in the future. My family and I are concerned about the differences in religion. From what I see in her, she seems like the type that will not even give RCIA a chance. It is very important that my brother marry another Catholic. I hope that doesn’t sound bad. He just seems to be changing. He is so wrapped up in this girl. My mom and dad are very worried. My mom believes that my brother is telling my mom things she wants to hear instead of what is really going on. Sounds confusing I know. We just aren’t sure what to do. Any suggestions. Thanks.

These are the first questions that came to my mind:

How old is your brother? Is this the first serious relationship he’s had? Other than the fact that his gf isn’t Catholic, is she a nice girl? Has she met your parents? Are the two of them being open about their relationship to their friends/family? What do her parents think about him? How well do you know her? Why would your mother assume that your brother is lying to her? Does she have any other reason to assume that other than his new gf? Why has the family already (after 7 months) gotten “very worried” about an impending marriage?

The advice you’ve solicited will probably be different depending on the answers to those questions. Context is everything.

Too many unanswered questions here…

How old is brother?
How old are you?
How well do you really know her?

Now, the big question…“it is very important that my brother marry another Catholic.” Important to WHOM? You? Your parents? Him?

Ultimately, assuming your brother is of age (that is, a legal adult), it is really up to him to decide who he wants to marry…

Hi JMJ01, one’s brothers hold such a dear place in our hearts, don’t they. We as sisters feel that we need to protect them from all hurt, especially when we know how bad it hurts when a relationship fails. You say that they constantly say " I Love You" to each other? Don’t you beleive them? My advice to you is trust in the Lord, he knows best. Give your brother all the support that he needs, show him that no matter what, whether his relationship fails or succeeds in God, you will be there. Sometimes its is best to trust in Him, bc His ways is not always our way, the path that he has led out for us, we will not know. I trust your brother will see way and remember the most important thing is that he is happy
