My brothers new collage course

My brother is taking Classics, at a seculer collage. He is taking a course about greek civ. and some of the photos (or artwork) in his textbooks are of nakid people. He clams its art and he does not look at it sexually,and says “David was nakid in a statue”. is this porn?

He is also reading sexual poems for a Latin Class…but he sys all of these courses are nessescary because its apart of the culture of Roem, greace ect…

I have always said I was against it…whats your opion?

What do you consider a sexual poem? Would Song of Songs in the Bible be a sexual poem? (That said, I know there exists some explicit literature that is not worth reading.)

The big difference between art and pornography, is Art highlights the beauty of the human body that God created, while pornography objectifies the body and degrades it.

As a side note… with art, it seems that when you have a sculpture, or painting, it is not as… “personal” as a photograph. I believe that artistic “nude/semi-nude” photographs can exist, but in my opinion the line is very fine compared to a painting or sculpture. (Don’t get me wrong, I do believe that there can be pornographic sculpture and paintings, but the subject matter also tends to sexually explicit in nature.)

It is difficult to define porn except by the rather vague words, “I know it when I see it.”

Nakedness by itself is not porn. The human body is beautiful and worthy of art. Yet, people have different thresholds for lust. If your brother says that these paintings and sculptures do not excite him then you have to take his word for it.

When I was an art student I spent hours drawing the human form from live models (men and women). It was not pornographic to do so. The human body is beautiful. Pornography does not take the body as a whole, but typically focuses on specific parts in order to arouse sexual interest.
We had Fr. Loya, a Byzantine Catholic priest and former art student as well, speak at a laity forum here a few months ago. He brought along a nude that he had drawn. He then demostrated the above point by pasting net stockings, high heels, and lingerie on the figure—it was a good illustration of reducing the figure to specific pieces in a pornographic manner, even though the figure in the drawing was actually more covered than it was before.

Also, in order to fully capture a realistic depiction of the human body, you have to know how to draw a nude. Clothing drapes over the body according to what is underneath.

Really in order to draw a good nude, you have to go even further and understand a little basic anatomy also. The muscles and skeletal structure affects how the nude looks and the nude body affects how clothing hangs on the body.

It is an interesting point about clothing making a body more sexual.

Yes, we had artistic anatomy as well—I went to a traditional atelier, so we actually learned something instead of being served up the tripe that is the norm for an “art” college. (That emperor is not wearing any clothes…)
