My chapel veil won't stay on...

I know there have been a lot of “veiling” threads lately, about who veils, who doesn’t, why, etc…and I guess I could have asked this in one of those but I was afraid that it would get burried…so…

My chapel veil just won’t stay on my head.

I pin it using a bobby pin, and I have tried pinning it to the edge of the veil, and also sticking it in one of the openings in the lace.

I have very fine hair, so I wonder if that’s part of it…
 
I am guy but I used to see my sister using this kind of pin. It seems to be a good choice for pinning something to your hair: I don’t know what it is called, but it is good to have 2 or 3 of them for your fine hair. This kind of pin can hold things better than the one you are using.

Maybe your veil is heavy.

 
For fine or very straight hair even those pins/clips won’t work!

May I suggest you look for some simple crocheted scarves that you can tie under your hair? Kind of like a head band thing. I have made half granny squares out of crochet thread and added a simple border with a double crocheted string for either side. These have stayed on my head through a Mass.

The other idea is maybe you can find some headbands that you can simply stitch onto your veil and use that to hold it on. I am not sure if I am explaining this right:o. Maybe some one who crafts can help explain it.

If you curl your hair it might help as well as that will give the pins something to hold onto (if your hair will curl).

There’s a young lady where I go to daily Mass, who wears a lace chapel veil and ties it under her hair behind her head. I don’t know if that would work for you.

I placed a small strip of sticky velcro (the part with the most traction) about 6 inches from the center edge of the veil. The velcro I had was white so I used a black marker to go over the outside. No more sliding, and I can easily take it off.
 
I have very fine hair as well.
I sewed a hair comb into the seam of my mantilla (see picture below). I pull the hair at my crown together and hold it with bobby pins (I usually do this in the car. A barrette would work as well) and then I slide the comb in. It told very well since the comb in held up by the excess hair and the bobby pins.

I used the same approach with my daughter’s chapel cap, but I sewed a small clip barrette to the seam instead of a comb. I have used her cap a few times, and this holds very well, too.

If this does not work, a thin headband sewn to the veil would work as well.
 
I have fine, silky hair as well. I sewed my veil to a fabric-covered headband, and it stays on just fine that way. But I found a long lacy oblong scarf which I like better than my veil. I can just tie that beneath my hair, and it stays put.
 
You could always get a larger scarf and use that. Or you could wear a fancy hat.

I’m not a female, so I only wear chapel vails on very special occaisions 😃 … but I do know that if you wash them (in a washing machine), it makes the stay on better. Someone told my wife that years ago and it worked.

This might work for some if you don’t starch it again after washing it:). The starch in the veil makes it “slippery”. So if you want to try this idea, just steam the wrinkles out, don’t add starch!

I’d agree with the other suggestions of trying to attach a comb or a thin headband to it. Or you could get a really long scarf and tie it.

Have you considered a hat? Here is a website that has all kinds of women’s hats.
 
If you are scared to sew anything on your veil, just use a hard headband and tuck the front of your veil under the headband. Make sense?

I back comb a little so the comb will have something to stick into.😉
 
One of the young women at my church had the same problem, so she got some cream-colored sheer fabric with sparkly things on it, cut a triangle and sewed a bronze cord to the edge, which she could tie around her head (like tying a kerchief). I gather it works, and it looks quite nice.

Those are called,😉 logically enough, “clippies”.

There will also be help finding other things (like the combs & headbands mentioned above) that are sold by many of these folks.

I have the same problem - fine, silky hair. You’ve gotten some really good suggestions, I see. But I just deal with pulling and readjusting it.

However, the one I have I purchased in Venice, Italy, many years ago - Can’t get anything like it here. Any suggestions? It doesn’t seem easy by looking at the internet pics of Spanish mantillas.

I should have thought to look at them this summer. I fail at life.

The one I have is nice, though. It was given to me by a friend so it doesn’t have that new over-starchedness to it.
