My church returns to its traditional roots

Im trying to decide what type of funeral service I should have! If they still have the NO funeral services at St.Peters I think id want a Byzantine one. At the same time ive been away for 61 years, and the people I know at the church are long since passed on. What do you guys think?

As a side note he even wears black vestments to funerals like they used to. My question is it just me or does it look promising that we are going to return to the latin mass at my church? PS: The church has always been traditionally minded we never got rid of our old tabernacle after Vatican 2.

I looked at the website. You have a beautiful parish church there. It sounds like the parishioners have also, over the years, been very involved with the building and it’s furnishings.

I actually had my Byzantine wedding service inside St.peters. Now I dont even know what they do anymore- too many books and the order of service and some of the prayers are different now. Also, its too long last time I went I stayed for 1 and 45 minutes. My hips were killing me now I dont go to funerals their anymore

That’s a great UC parish. Most Eastern Catholic churches are very nice.

This is great news. Here is what to do, make sure you and everyone you know give the priest positive feedback. Send simple hand written notes so he can build a file of support and make sure people contribute to the cost of restoring your parish to sanity. He will need all of this in case the cafeteria Catholics start a letter writing campaign to the Bishop wanting him removed. Get him wearing a cassock and fascia. You are lucky to be in this parish, maybe the 40 year nightmare is over at your parish.

Maryz, your pastor needs no permission from the bishop to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass, as long as he can do it without neglecting his obligations. So, you should ask your pastor directly for the traditional Mass.

Roman chasubles are completely fine for wear in the OF. No, a maniple would not be worn, unfortunately. In my opinion, a Roman chasuble especially looks terribly orphaned without a maniple.

There is nothing stopping a priest from wearing a maniple in the OF, he just doesn’t have to.

I think it would be very nice to have a Byzantine funeral. I’ve never seen one.
 
Just curious… what is a pre-Vatican II tabernacle and how does it differ from a post-Vatican II tabernacle?

The original poster is obviously not exposed to the boundless wisdom of internet Catholic education. She is 82 years old, lived through Vatican II, and it is quite natural of her to speak in such terms.

I asked in sincerity since the OP made a distinction. I didn’t know if there was some difference that I was not aware of.

There is not, but it has been fashionable in recent decades for some reason to relegate the tabernacle to some side altar even if there is one on the high altar, or to relegate it to some chapel even if the church is relatively normal-sized (that is, not a giant cathedral).

After Vatican II, most tabernacles were moved from the Altar to the side, often where they weren’t visible. “They have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid Him” (Jn.10:13)

I’m 51. the last 40 years have been wonderful, now more that ever. Every year is better than the last. Give the priests and bishops support always, not just when the liturgical flavor is appealing!
I am reminded of some staple rationalizations we get from cafeteria catholics at our parish…

One is “I don’t come anymore because the Church never changes (pick your doctrine: abortion, gay marriage, contraception)”.
The other is "I don’t come anymore because the Church has changed so much (we don’t say mass in Latin, the priest and servers don’t dress the right way, the music is…whatever)

Neither attitude builds up the body of Christ. One attitude lacks commitment.
One attitude makes evangelization very difficult because it gives the impression that Tradition is superficial.
