My confusion on indulgences

What exactly is indulgences? I’m very confused, even though I researched it I just do not understand it. Can somebody please explain what an indulgence is please and its affects?

We ask the saints to pray for us. We pray for the souls in purgatory. Only those who die in a state of grace are in purgatory.

When you commit a sin after baptism, there is a temporal punishment you must pay.

An example: A lapsed Catholic murders a man. His temporal punishment is life in prison. He confesses the sin (with true repentance) and is absolved. He still must pay the temporal punishment either in prison for life or in purgatory.

We can offer our penance, sufferings, prayers, and indulgences on behalf of our sins to shorten purgatory.

An indulgence pays for our temporal punishments that we earn from sin that we commit. When we die, if we have not paid for all of our temporal punishments, we will pay for them in purgatory.

A partial indulgence remits part of our temporal punishment. A plenary indulgence remits all of our temporal punishment we have earned up to that point.

Note: Baptism remits all sins and temporal punishment. Confession remits only sins.

We can gain indulgences for the poor souls in purgatory and pray for them.
 
If I break my neighbor’s window, and ask him to forgive me, I still must pay for the window.

However, I can do work for the neighbor and that can eliminate the debt.

So an indulgence is “work” that we do for God, to make up for some of what we owe Him, despite the fact that He has already forgiven us.

I remember a few years ago on All Souls’ Day, after satisfying the conditions for a plenary indulgence, then going to the main cemetery in our city and offering it to a soul most in need - at the same time humbly ‘nudging’ God in His Divine mercy to work a spiritual ‘multiplyer’ for yet more souls.

On coming back home I walked through the darkened kitchen heading for the light switch in the hallway. As I traversed the kitchen the phone in one corner of the room [resting in it’s charging cradle] started to rock and emit those distinctive ‘contact sounds’ for two or three seconds - at the same time I got a strong ‘feeling’ in my mind that a soul or souls were saying their thankyou as they passed to Heaven - it was a very warming feeling indeed! I have had other similar experiences, and ‘know’ that those souls are so grateful for all prayers AND indulgences offered for them. Just imagine if you can how much more powerfully they can and do pray for you, especially when attianing Heaven!!! 👍

I have taught my five young children the value of offering indulgences to the Holy Souls-hardly anyone thinks of them anymore.Very sad. One day we will need their prayers very much.
