My conscience and watching a movie

A young man I know, loaned me a DVD called “Boondock Saints”. He claimed I would like it because it was about Catholics who were killing in the name of God. Then, someone told me there was a small female nudity portion in it. However, in my mind, I feel I would be sinning mortally by watching this and I would be causing others to sin by letting them see it in my house.

Well, I don’t want to offend this person I know, but I feel God comes before anyone else. My father is curious about watching it and then there is a guy who wants to borrow it after I see it.

I am contemplating not watching it and just passing it on to the other guy.

Any good opinions on what I should do?

Thanks and God Bless

If you think the female nudity portion would cause you to entertain lustful thoughts, skip it (though I’m not sure if you’re sinning mortally by simply watching the film). If you feel that your chastity formation is strong enough to resist entertaining such thoughts, watch the movie- just fast forward the nudity part.

Check out what the USCCB has to say about the movie (not that I always agree with their reviews, but it’s a helpful place to start).

I know I’m generally always so embarassed for the people who are showing up nude all the time in these movies that lustful thoughts are the last thing on my mind! More like, “Oh goodness, does that man’s mother know that her son has shown the entire world his bits and pieces??”

Cheers,
Cari

I love that movie!
Yes, there is female nudity (a stripper)
There is a lot of cussing and violence. Oh yes, and the detective is gay, and you do see him in bed with another man (nothing happening, but it is obvious what did happen)

Hi,

I am a big prude about movies, but I actually enjoyed The Boondock Saints. There is indeed a lot of questionable content, mostly homosexual references, tons of violence, and a very short scene in a strip joint. It’s not a super great movie, but it could be a good springboard for some awesome conversations with your friend.

As a general rule, it would most certaintly not be a mortal sin to watch this film, since it is not pornographic in intent. Whether it could lead you, personally, into sin is another question. Unless you have a severe sexual addiction, you could probably just fast-forward through the parts that pose a temptation.

You sound like perhaps you might struggle with scrupulosity regarding sexual sin. Are you aware of the distinctions between temptation and sin, with regard to impure thoughts and physical arousal? It is not automatically sinful just to watch a movie with a nude scene. What would be sinful is actively lusting after the images you see.

God bless!
