As a Roman Catholic, I feel and have had a special relationship with my Lord. I have had a tough go at life, but have always prayed to get through life’s situations and deadlines and it just seems like everytime despair or uncertainity have been lurking around the corner, a devine assistance has come my way and gotten me through it.
I have a question that I hope someone can answer or lend insight to. As a good 'ole Italian guy, I have always worn a gold necklace from Italy, with two different crucifixs and a commemorative coin of Pope John Paul (which I converted to a medallion). A good friend of mine had a private audience with of now Blessed deceased Pope and he actually held my necklace and blessed it. I want to know what this now means, since he is on the road to Sainthood? It must obviously be a rare and Blessed thing to own and possess and pray with an object of this kind, right?

You have a third class relic! Third class relics are not necessarily rare, but are always special!

I wondered myself, what happens when an article is blessed by a priest who later becomes a saint, whether that meant anything? I have a replica of John Paul’s papal crucifix, that was blessed by him. The replica is from Italy and was made with the approval and support of the maker of the original, presented to the Holy Father for his blessing, then distributed to buyers of books from a certain publisher. There was a limited supply available, it is about 5 inches long. Very detailed pewter-like metal.

Is it a relic if the beatified person blessed something without touching it? Lots of people have crucifixes blessed by Pope John Paul II- many have more than one. I can’t imagine he touched each one to bless it.

I’m sure medals blessed by Pope John Paul II arn’t relics unless he touched t

I’ve an icon of the Black Madonna which Bl Pope John Paul blessed with his hand as I held it up to him in his “pope-mobile” when he was in Canada.

He smiled when he saw me holding it up (he seemed a bit startled as he wasn’t expecting that) but then he blessed it slowly. I’ll never forget it.

The Oblates of Mary Immaculate are building a Church in honour of their founder, St Eugene de Mazenod and the priest was given the white cassock worn by Bl. John Paul II on the day he died (by Cardinal Dziwiz).

I was privileged to pray on my knees before this cassock when the priest brought it out to show me and to place a cross and other items on it.

I’ve never had a priest bless something where he didn’t touch it, they have always held the items they have blessed for me.
