Before I ask this question, I would like to say that I really want a job, and I really want to work, but here’s the situation. I am in the middle of moving, and I was offered a job at a local business because they know I’ll work when I’m supposed to. My Dad feels that since he had to work at 16, I should to, and I agree with him. But, I could move at anytime (once our house sells), and to have a job for a few weeks really wouldn’t be worth it. Not to mention the fact that my Mom would have to drive 30 minutes away to pick me up because I would be working until 10:30 at night in a not so good area. My question is, what should I do? I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but I don’t think it’s a good idea at this point. Thank you for your answers and advice. It really means a lot to me! 😃

Based on the location status, it sounds like this move is going to be a big one. It isn’t like you are moving to the next town.

I wouldn’t take it. It wouldn’t be fair to the employer or you. If your dad really wants you to have a job, let him know that you’ll start looking once you move. It doesn’t look good to only work at a place for a few weeks. It could actually make it harder to find another job.

Honor your Father and Mother.

Does the person who offered you this job know you are moving soon?
And is your mom OK with driving you there and back?

If both is a yes, then do it. Otherwise I would decline and find a job once you are settled in the new place.

Does the employer know you would be leaving so soon?

I would wait until after the move before finding a new job. Ask your dad if he would rather you take the time you would be spending working to help with the move.

Your parents have their house for sale and are moving out of state, yes? Well, you don’t know how long it will take for the house to sell. It could literally be 6 months or even more. That in mind, I’d take the job if mom is ok driving back and forth. And I’d make sure the employer knows you’ll be moving once the house sells.

Worst case scenario you have some work experience before the move and when you apply for other jobs you can list that experience with a good reason for leaving the job, namely moving out of state.

I live in south east MI. Jobs here are hard to find, even fast food jobs. Having at least some previous experience will make a job search here easier.

My Mom is fine with it. Whether or not I take the job is completely my choice, and she said she is out of it, and that it’s between my Dad and me.
It sounds like you should man up and get to work.

What would you be doing if you don’t? Let me guess video games!?

If your father is supporting you and wants you to work, you should work.

God Bless

First, I’m a girl, and I strongly dislike video games, but manning up I am doing. Second, I’m working hard to finish school a year early, and so far, it looks like I’ll be completely finished with high school in September/October. Terribly excited about that! 😃

Sorry for the confusion!

Congratulations on finishing up school early!

Why does your dad feel you need this job? If he has good reason, or at least a reason I think you should do it.

Honor your Father and Mother.
Honoring my Mother and Father is what I shall do! I have decided to apply for the job. Application is almost completely filled out (waiting to hear back from those I’d like to write down as references), and I will be turning it in on Tuesday, as it is a military based job and the office is already closed today and will be closed Monday as well.

No problem, hun! It happens to me all the time, so don’t worry! 😛

Thank you! 😃

He feels that since he had to work at 16, I should as well, and I completely agree with him. What I don’t want to have happen is for me to get the job (I’ll be interviewed after the 25th of this month), and then 2 or 3 weeks later find out I’ll have to leave. However, since it is a job through the military, I’ll be able to transfer to another position at my Dad’s new station, which does work out for me. I’ve decided to apply for it, then I’ll do the interview, and hopefully I will get this job, as it will be quite helpful.

Sounds like your dad is just trying to help you transition into adulthood with learning to take on more responsibility and gaining work experience.

Good Luck!
