*My dd asked me this last night…she has been praying the Rosary as her Lent commitment, alone, where she prays the Rosary along with Mother Angelica on EWTN. (we pray it together on the weekend, I pray it alone during the week, so this is her thing she selected to do for Lent on her own) She asked me when she was through last night if the graces that the Rosary brings to us, if that is ''only if we pray the Rosary out loud, or do we receive the ‘same’ graces if we pray along with a show like Mother Angelica’s?"

I assume that if one follows along with Mother Angelica, or another program, or a cd, etc…as opposed to reciting it out loud, that the same graces would be bestowed…but thought I’d double check with you all here. Thanks! :)*

You can receive the same graces through Our Lady. There is a difference between praying aloud and praying silently of the rosary in terms of indulgences, however…

Enchiridion Indulgencia 1968:
  1. Deserving of special mention are the following works, for any one of which the faithful can gain a plenary indulgence each day of the year – saving, however, the provision of Norm 24,§ 1, according to which no one can gain more than one plenary indulgence in the course of a single day:
– the recitation of the Marian Rosary in a church or public oratory or in a family group, a
religious Community or pious Association (n. 48).(under the usual conditions)
  1. The recitation of a third part only of the Rosary suffices; but the five decades must be
    recited continuously.
  2. The vocal recitation must be accompanied by pious meditation on the mysteries.
  3. In public recitation the mysteries must be announced in the manner customary in the place;
    for private recitation, however, it suffices if the vocal recitation is accompanied by meditationon the mysteries.
  1. If the work, enriched with a plenary indulgence, can fittingly be divided into separate parts
    (for example, the decades of the Marian Rosary) and if for a reasonable cause it cannot be
    performed in its entirety, a partial indulgence can be gained for the part completed.
Otherwise it is only a partial indulgence. 🙂

I’m so glad I asked this…really? She’ll be interested to know. So the graces do not change, but the indulgences do, if one does not recite out loud, the Rosary. That is so interesting to me. Thank you for your reply. 🙂

There is nothing to stop her from saying the responses out loud and thereby gaining the indulgence as well.

I make the responses aloud even when I’m listening to the rosary CD in my car by myself. It helps me stay focused. I have also found that if I am saying the rosary alone (without a CD or Mother Angelica), I keep count better if I say the prayers aloud.

Good advice kage and sally…thank you! I will show her that link, kage. 🙂 I thought it was curious that she asked this question…I hadn’t given it much thought. 😊
