Hi everyone,

My dog of about 17 years died last month 2 days before Christmas.

As an only child, my dog, his name is Max, was genuinely my brother. He watched me grow up from a 7 year old kid to now a 23 year old adult.

I miss him so much and just hoped and wished he could’ve lived long enough to see me make something more of my life such as graduate from grad school, get married, and have kids.

I know there has been conflicting beliefs on whether dogs’ have souls or not, but regardless, I truly believe my dog Max has a soul and that he is watching me in Heaven with my other dog Sega.

I would like to ask for prayers for Max’s soul and Sega’s soul too. I pray that they both are resting in peace in Heaving and in Happiness with God watching over our family.

I pray that I make them both proud.

I thank you all, I pray for all of you each day, God Bless!🙂

I will pray (I just did actually), but your probably going to get a lot of responses along the line of “Animals don’t have souls according to Church teaching”.

However, you might check out some of these passages from C.S. Lewis on the issue. I think there isn’t anything wrong with hoping there may be a place for animals we have loved in eternity as long as it doesn’t come at the expense of human dignity (i.e. PETA).

However, I would say, if Lewis is right, I think your pet doesn’t need the prayers—there might be a heaven for pets, but not a purgatory. Whether or not pets can enter heaven won’t change regardless of our prayers. Rather, pray for your own solace.

I also believe animals have souls though I realize I’m going against the current, here. I hope to see my animals in heaven, too, cats, dogs, birds, etc.

Praying for Max’s soul and Sega’s too.

ICXC NIKA, OP.

I don’t know enough to say whether there is an animal afterlife or not, but as our LORD left that an open question, we are allowed to hope.

You were blessed indeed to have him for seventeen years. My FoxyLady passed on this fall, aged sixteen, and I will miss her for ever.

Praying that you will meet again and they will rest in
peace.

I would pray that our beloved dogs receive the love our Creator has for all His creation, and that if they have a soul they will be with us in heaven if it is His will. These creatures cannot sin so deserve a destiny of fulfillment of their nature. I hold on to the hope that my dogs will be with me by the creek near His house where we have our rooms (mine down the back on the top of the stairs). However the Church wisely suggests gently that our happiness will be fulfilled entirely by our jealous God. But I have the soul of a child. He understands.

I believe there will be our pets in heaven, they brought us so much love and happiness in this world, why not be with us in the next…i hope to see my deceased pets there too…so I will definitely pray for your dog,…when you pray ask god to keep him safe in his arms and to give him back to you once you are in heaven… 🙂

It is actually not so much a question of weather they have a soul or not. The reason God takes our pet to heaven is because we loved them.😛

I love my dog but I hate to tell you this dogs don’t have immortal souls. This is something I know very well from when I had to bury puppies a couple weeks ago I understand you are upset but please don’t project your image of what heaven is like on to what it is actually like.

Without meaning to sound uncharitable, I question the need for you to respond to the thread to make such a statement. This person didn’t post this in a theology sub-forum, he asked for prayer.

Sometimes, because we are His children, we can talk to Him with our hearts and leave our overwhelming knowledge of what we do not know to one side…

God bless your sweet doggie, he lived a full life!

Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins my Mother;
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful;
O Mother of thy Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy clemency hear and answer me.
Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with Thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

You don’t know what heaven feels or looks like either. He asked for us to pray.

Agreed, over the past many years, we have lost many beloved pets. I raised 7 sons and many pets with them. But we never ever considered praying for them after they died. Several we had to have put to sleep because of old age or health problems and as hard as that was, we knew it had to be done. But lets get real, animals cannot sin so are in no need of prayers after death. Today we seem to have the notion that everybody and their pets are all going to Heaven. I think it’s time we learned exactly what the Church teaches on that idea. Our God given memory is an amazing thing and I believe we will remember our pets in the proper perspective of Heaven. Time will heal your loss and I will pray for that. Learning to trust God in life and death, (even the death of our pets), is part of our growing in Faith. God Bless, Memaw

Max, and all animals, have more sense than to sin in this life, and so are, in the next life, safely and securely in the place God has planned for them since forever.

And so I will thank God for the joy Max gave you during this life, and for your peace and well-being. As to whether or not he’s in heaven? If we need our pets in heaven in order to be eternally happy there with God, then of course our pets will be there!

praying for your dog Max and thankful you had such a loyal companion for so many years. grieving for a pet who has passed is very hard.
praying for you as you grieve the loss of your friend.

I really have no idea what the point of your making this sort of statement. The OP didn’t post this in the in the Theology forums. He didn’t come here to have a debate.

To me, it’s like someone asking for for a prayer in the hope that all people can be saved and then trotting out a list of quotations from the saints about the fewness of the saved. If that’s your view of it, fine, but the poster didn’t ask for your opinion, but your prayers; and not for prayers that essentially dismiss what the poster is really asking for.

Nothing wrong with my statement. Animals do NOT have souls, at least not the kind that get them to Heaven. They do NOT sin, so no danger of Hell either. Only God knows the rest of the story. I am praying for him, just not his dog! St. Francis of Assisi loved all animals, yet I don’t recall ever reading anything where he prayed for a dead one. God Bless, Memaw
