My Ordinary Form and ExtraOrdinary Mass Form Experiences

I went to both forms this past Corpus Christi Sunday at churches not in my hometown as I was attending a concert that evening.

I went to the OF Mass first. It was the first Mass on Sunday morning, not a lot of people there - maybe about half the pews with people. It was a typical Mass with music and lay participation in various sections like the readings and assisting with Communion distribution to the faithful.

I later went to the EF Mass. It was held in a chapel like place in the cathedral. It was a simple setup, and a small congregation. The altar was setup so that the priest would be not facing the congregation most of the time. He also had 2 male altar servers that were adults wearing black and white robes. Before Mass, I did introduce myself to the priest, and he thanked me for coming, and said if I have questions to ask those near me. I remembered to bring my father’s old missal to refer to the various readings etc for Corpus Christi Sunday.

I sat near the back of the congregation conservatively attired & wearing a black mantilla. Everyone in the congregation was also dressed nicely & conservative in either a nice business casual or professional style of clothing, even the children with their parents. Nearly every female had their head covered either with a mantilla, scarf, hat, or chapel veil in some way including the young girls. Very few women did not cover their heads, and it was possible they were visitors or forgot their head coverings.

What struck me is that during Mass, the kids were quiet and rarely talked. The few babies that were there were taking to the back area when they made a fuss. I did notice many parents had brought books for the kids to follow along with Mass as they were not yet 1st Communion age.

It was relatively quiet before Mass with very little talking compared to the OF Mass where people tend to talk in whispers or very low voices before it starts. Most people prayed the rosary quietly or other prayers, others sat quietly.

The only parts of the Mass that were in English were the Epistle, The Gospel, The Homily and the prayers after the Last Gospel. The only singing was after the prayers was the “Lourdes Hymn” (Immaculate Mary) - 1st verse.

Much of the Mass of the Faithful part could not be heard by the faithful as the prayers were read in a low voice by the priest, there were a few exceptions, and you really had to pay attention to know where the priest was at to follow along.

The communion rail was setup before Mass with about 6 kneelers placed together. You only receive the host on the tongue and do not respond to the priest with Amen like in the OF. The priest is the only one who drinks from the chalice.

After the Last Gospel then a set of prayers, then Mass is over. People did chat some but in lower voices. Those people who did notice that I was a visitor were welcoming and nice to me, and hoped that I would return sometime.

I do wish that a few things would carry over from the EF to the OF Mass in my opinion - people dressing better, kids being a bit quieter and dressed decently, and a bit more quiet before Mass for those who wish to pray or reflect quietly.

You will need to try out a High Mass now! It’s a very different experience compared to a Low Mass!

I hope you enjoyed this form of the mass and attend again!

I do believe that the EF is having an effect on the NO Mass.
I think that we need both. I often think of the NO Mass as Mass 101 for those who are learning and the EF Mass is for those who are seeking an even greater understanding of the meaning of Mass.

I also think that the NO Mass has helped the EF Mass.
It is not taken for granted. The priests who celebrate the EF Mass are not going to simply go through the motions.

I will have to try that when I have another Sunday off work due to my work schedule, and have to fulfill my Sunday obligation by going on Saturday evening Mass instead.

It was a different experience for sure, and I have an appreciation for the way things were for my parents who were in their late teens/early 20’s when the Mass was changed to the OF.

What is High Mass? And were can I attend?

A Low Mass is one in which the mass is spoken not sung. Singing is only allowed during the procession, offertory, communion, and recessional.

A High Mass is one in which the entire mass is sung. Everything the priest says, minus the homily, is chanted. The mass has a very different feel as there is much less silence. In addition, much of what the priest says is not heard at all as the choir typically sings over the priest.

Note: Technically a High Mass requires a Priest, a Deacon, and a Sub-Deacon. A mass which is sung, but lacks deacons is technically not a High Mass but a Missa Cantata (sung mass). But, most people don’t make this distinction.

My diocese invited the FSSP priests, who celebrated the EF at my parish for quite some time. I was able to attend daily and Sunday Latin Mass frequently. Loved it. Now they have their own Church and it’s difficult for me to get there. :crying:

I hate it when ppl arrive late and leave early at the OF. It’s quiet before Mass, but afterwards you’d think Jesus had left the room – the chitchat is deafening. People show up dressed in shorts and immodest dress. None of this disrespectful behavior is ever observed at the EF.

My pastor has written (another) message in the bulletin describing the meaning of the priest’s vestments and asking “. . . how does what you wear to Mass give praise to God and demonstrate what you think and how you feel about the Sacred Liturgy?”

I really noticed that even the children were far more respectful, dressed nicer, and better behaved at the EF Mass.

I wished that more of the behaviors and conservative dress would carry over to the OF Mass as it seems that those who were at the EF Mass showed a lot more reverence in their small worship space before, during and after Mass.

Oh ok, I am in Maryland, I have gone to TLM before. Is High Mass just another name for the EF of Mass?
No. a High Mass is an EF Mass where almost everything is sung or chanted. Here are a few example videos from youtube:

youtube.com/watch?v=enWiFcsBqIE (Solemn High Mass in a seminary)
youtube.com/watch?v=xK8jPgJeGuA (Missa Cantata in an SSPX church)

And I believe all of the EWTN archived Traditional Mass videos are either Solemn High Masses or Missa Cantatas:

The Missa Cantata is the sung Mass which is longer than the Low Mass. It is generally started by the priest and altar boys processing around the church whilst the Asperges Mei is sung…the priest uses holy water during this.

It is quite a complicated Mass for the newcomer as several different things are useally happening simulataneously. When I first went I was happy to watch …it is a stunning experience, very beautiful. It took me many months to really get the whole Mass understood by myself.

The Leoline Prayers are not said after a Missa Cantata.

I certainly agree with you about wanting children to be brought up to behave better at the OF.

ButI I don’t agree with the implication that it is something inherent in the EF that made them behave. Surely it’s more likely that the parents there were traditional in their way of life as well as preferring a traditional way of worship? In other words, their pattern of discipline was old-fashioned in a good sense - teaching respect for others, self-control and so on? The children were being brought up to behave in a traditionally ‘good children’ way?

We were frequently complimented on the behaviour of our three at Mass, and sometimes amazed at what other parents let their children get away with. It could be that the children at your EF were influenced by the atmosphere - who can say. But overall, it’s more likely to be the atmosphere at home that influenced them the most.

Yes. The TLM in itself has no magical power. In our church the children, except the youngest one, behave in both form, simply because everyone behaves.

I remember the time when I attended the regular suburban type Masses, how during the last twenty years the behavior of the adults deteriorated, and together with that the behavior of the children.

As the tabernacle was removed from center, to promote the people’s flow the church slowly became a clubhouse.

I am not sure, that this is entirely wrong. When I was little, children before the preparation for the first communion stayed at home. Now even babies are there in good number. Babies cannot be controlled. I believe our Lord too, likes their noise, He said so. Somewhere there is a balance.

Surely your attendance at a Sunday EF fulfils your Sunday Obligation ? Or am I misunderstanding something here ?

I think he meant he currently has to go Saturday nights and High Masses are only offered on Sundays. Or I could be wrong aswell.🤷

I go to OF Masses on Saturday nights to fulfill my Sunday obligation as I must work Sundays at my job. I rarely have a Sunday off, and I had this recent Sunday off for a personal reason so I was able to go on Sunday to Mass.

I do not know if any EF Masses are held Saturday evenings or not. Most on the schedules I’ve looked at are only on Sundays.

Your comment about the tabernacle moved from the center was something the priest at the EF Mass touched on. I gave it some thought later on, and so many churches put it to the side or the back, not in the center.

Yes, Jesus said let the children come to me etc. I was so impressed with the kids being good and dressed nicely but I did not say so to their parents, possibly because I am so used to the parents of mainly preschoolers and older with their kids causing fusses and turning the sanctuary into a snack bar.

There’s only one such EF Mass in my general area. (Indiana actually) And it does count for Sunday.

The situation wasn’t the same in 1962, however. So there may be hesitancy to install a Saturday evening EF (to count for Sunday) for that reason.
