Martha, I was born and raised Catholic. I was baptized as a baby, made my 1st communion very young and I was Confirmed too young. I guess my church wanted to get the confirmations over and done with, but we were too young. But all this makes me Catholic. At 18 my intellect lead me away from God and the church. It took 10 yrs but God drew me back to Him. I’m not young, I’m 66. At 30 I joined a Full Gospel church which fell apart 3 yrs later. That was about 1983. I’ve never found a satisfactory church since them. Presently I’m disabled without a car and I need a walker. The only church I can get to is Catholic and I go there occasionally. I study the Bible diligently both the protestant Bible and the Catholic books. I’ve even read many apocryphal books such as Enoch, Jubilees, Jasper and others. I’m very disgusted with the protestant denominations. At the same time, I disagree with many Catholic doctrines. My dearly departed mother was 1 of the most pious people I ever knew and she was Catholic. I saw her pray for something and then it happened. I just don’t think God subscribes to any one religion. Jesus once said His true followers are scattered all over the place and this seems more true today than it was 2000 yrs ago.
I doubt that what I believe is what the CC teaches but that doesn’t matter. Jesus was born and raised Jewish, He even went into a temple every Saturday but the Jewish priests and teachers didn’t agree with Him. Time has shown Jesus was right. If He was just some nut by now no one would care about Him.
I think your parents are fine and you are too. You don’t sound like a lukewarm Catholic, those are the people in trouble.
I have to be true to God and myself. IMO a good church is a church that makes you closer to God.
