I had a powerful spiritual moment during Sunday’s Mass that I thought I should share.
As you know, it was the Feast of the Epiphany. At my church, they had children age 5-6 surround the altar during the Liturgy of the Eucharest.
It made me think about my beautiful 2-year-old boy at home. As I’ve previously talked about on these forums, my wife and I have been going to separate masses so one of us can stay home with our son, who just gets too rambunctious to make it through Mass.
But as I saw those boys and girls up there, I thought, “My son will be up there in a couple of years.” Then I had an indescribably overwhelming feeling of love come over me for my boy, who came to my wife and I relatively late in our lives and is just a blessing for us, brightening our lives every day.
Almost simultaneously, I was struck with the realization that God’s love for his son, Jesus Christ, is like what I was feeling, as well as His love for all of us, bringing Jesus into the world for our salvation.
We go through our Christian lives knowing this. But really, truly, to the depth of my core feeling it – “getting it” – in that moment felt very much like a gift The Holy Spirit wanted to impart to me.
I spent the next 15 minutes or so of Mass wiping away tears and hoping those next to me didn’t notice.
