My evil temptation

It is a common experience when I look at this forum to see posts like…
I just told my mother I didn’t like how she looked in that outfit. Is that a mortal sin? Do I need to see a priest on this one? Thanks, Darla

A question, then: Does this temptation of mine – and this post, which indulges the temptation – count as a mortal sin? Can God ever forgive me? :eek:
 
If i saw my mother in so as to speak what I might call tarty clothing then I would probably ask her a question (her being christian) "Mum who are you trying to impress, God or the world. The world might love you dressed that way but God might not./

I use the term "tarty’ on purpose because if a person dressed not to your liking but covered over then too bad for you as my father had to put up with, with my purple jacket stripped bell bottom pants and tie etc.
However if it were expressing her body then that is different. Your body belongs to God if a temple of the Holly Spirit, is NOT ours to muck around with.
It is all terminology and love of your parent and as the cover of you from God.

Are these intrusive thoughts? Because I have to combat intrusive immoral thoughts all day. There is a difference between willfully giving into them and them being not wanted in your mind.
 
I suffer from scruples from my OCD and I have intrusive thoughts all the time. It is just if you willfully entertain these thoughts.By for example in your case thinking about how you are going to embarrass this person and tell them they are going to go to hell. If you really think that in your heart then it is a sin. **Not when these things just pop into your head and are dismissed **
 
There are conditions that have to be met for a mortal sin.
  1. Grave matter
  2. Full knowledge
  3. deliberate consent
 
I think it would be mean of you to respond “yes, you’re going to hell” if that’s **not **what you honestly think of the situation.

Even if you were just being sarcastic about it because the situation is so silly, (would you really go to hell for saying the mom’s clothes look bad?), that could still make the person feel bad about themselves, when they were only asking a question.

If anything it’s probably a venial sin to post “yes, you’re going to hell” if you don’t mean it.

…from what i have read in the bible, the catechism, and works like my imitation of Christ, it is my understanding the compunction demonstrated by you and “darla” is a g(G)ood thing…the Mercy of the Lord is profound - do not despair of His forgiveness…think and seek to do always what may be pleasing to Him…

…if you have not considered it, perhaps you might look into spiritual gains through ignatian spiritual exercises - ask your parish priest about a retreat…the silence and calm that are experienced through the exercises can be of great significance to those who would increase/fortify their humility, kindness, and gentility…pray that the Lord may direct you in the direction of making the retreat or alternatively in what direction Wisdom would unfold for your l(L)ife in/with/through Christ according to your specific need…

…i avoided reading my imitation of Christ for a very long time - i did not think i was ready…like you, i wondered at one time if God could ever forgive me…my witness to the Mercy of the Lord is from direct experience…i have yet to finish my imitation of Christ - i’m trying to apply the information to my being and actions…it’s slow progress…i will probably read/re-read the book for the rest of my life…

Hey Prodigal man, I think you’ve gotten it goofed up. We need to go back to the new Testament one more time and see that sin (and death) are no longer the problem. People don’t go to Hell because of sins. Jesus has taken sin away. What sends folks to Hell is rejecting Jesus and His salvation. This is the power of grace. The Bible says “where sin increased, grace increased all the more”. Wow! So Prodigal, what you want to do is look at God’s promises and put our faith in them and not in the traditions of men. Then we will have true Christian freedom and no longer be in bondage. "There is therefore now no condemnation…Rms. 8:1.

Hmmmm. When did Sin go out of fashion? The great Karl Mennenger wrote a book sometime in the 60’s called “What Ever Happened to Sin?” Since the time of the Apostles who taught about sin - and quoted Christ; sin and repentance have been preached until a Neurotic Catholic Priest invented “Faith Alone” - a man made tradition.

Happy, Clappy! Now we can" sin - and sin Boldly" as Martin Luther insisted. Disregard the Church, Disregard the Apostles, Disregard Jesus Christ. Say the magic incantation and walk to the front of the altar. Your Saved. Never worry about sin again. Christ will cover over your slimy body of filth with his Blood when you enter the gates of heaven. God will be blind and will not see the filth. In spite of the fact that he said " You must be Perfect to enter into Heaven ".

Sin is still very much here. Our Lord took all our sins on his shoulders and has given us the opportunity to confess our sins. The reign of sin has very much ended. Remember Sola Fide was and is a heresy.

You can absolutely not do anything you want and believe in Jesus and just get into heaven. You must do his will!!!
 
In such cases you should encourage people to go to confession, as I encourage you to go to confession for these thoughts. I think everyone is better of going to confession if they have doubts no matter what the sin was even if it doesn’t seem “that bad” to us. Confession delivers many many graces!!!

I personally have a problem with people saying that. The reason is because when I was going through hard times with scruples I thought I had to go to confession for every little intrusive thought that came into my head ( I wasn’t entertaining them). So I think that it is best to make them aware of the conditions for mortal sins, and to tell them to talk to there priest/confessor about it. Thanks. God Bless 🙂
 
If you do know for sure that you have sinned then you should go to confession though. I cant stress that enough. It is a great gift that our Lord has given us.

PS – I take your question to be, Is sarcasm a sin?

I think it’s a sin in most circumstances. If you’re speaking with someone you know very well, who understands your sense of humor and is confident in your friendship, then some good-natured sarcasm would not be sinful. But in any other context, I think sarcasm involves pride and impatience. We’re proud in that we want to show off our wit and show how silly the other person’s views are. And we’re impatient in that we don’t take the time to frame our response in a charitable form.

(I say we here because I’ve given in to this temptation more times than I can count!)

Catholics do not reject Jesus or the grace of God. They do not consider Sacred Tradition to be “man made” either. But I know exactly what you are saying. Once people realize that Jesus Christ took all of our sin debt past, present, and future and died with them on the cross in our place, and offers salvation as a free gift, there is tremendous peace and joy. Obedience is then done our of pure love for Christ. This obedience is not tainted by fear of condemnation.

**Brother your teaching or thinking seems very superficial. Firstly no person has the right to put aside the old testament because Jesus told us that He did not come to put aside the old testament but to fulfill it. Taking it from the flesh into the spirit. God made man in the form that man would NEED to humble himself. If this was not so then why did God do away with the Jews on their way to the promised land? Purely because they grummbled over and over again God’s mercy prevailed until enough.

If this was not so that they need God’s mercy then mankind would not need God. It is the knowledge God has given us of our sinful nature that God causes man to humble himself and fall on his knees and seek forgiveness, (God’s mercy).

It is by the very cross of Jesus Christ that forgiveness is granted when we realize that the only way to the Father is through Jesus Christ. Jesus tells us all the way through the new testament that it is no good saying you believe that Jesus Christ is lord when we see a brother in need and we do not help him. even satan knows that Jesus Christ is Lord.

God’s love for His people is wound up in love proved through relating the same love God has for us through helping others it is seen every day in the word mercy. And mercy is the word made flesh from the Father in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ in the works of mercy He did in others and it now is expected of us every day we see a person needing help as the good Samaritan.

Love in this earth comes only in the form of taking Jesus as our Savior and showing the same mercy Jesus gave to the people, and that came through the Holy Spirit, all for the glory to go back to the Father. Remember the word of God tells us that NO WORD goes back to the Father until it is fulfilled. remember also that God made us TO HIS OWN LIKENESS, God is LOVE, LOVE is seen on earth in acts of MERCY giving praise to God.
