Lt. Columbo was my favorite TV police detective of all time. “…Just one more thing…”

Columbo was also my dad’s favorite.
There is a statue of Columbo in Budapest.

I like many police detectives, mostly from the Quinn Martin Productions TV era, but my favorites are probably Karl Malden and Michael Douglas from “Streets of San Francisco”.
Had a crush on Michael Douglas then and never quite lost it.
Always had a little crush on San Francisco too.

Jerry Orbach from Law and Order was good too.

Now that I’m nearing his age when Buddy Ebsen started playing the role, Barnaby Jones. That old dude could sure run when he had to chase the bad guy 👴

They just started running Barnaby Jones on MeTV. Starting at 1:00 am CST, they have Mannix, Cannon and then Barnaby Jones. Bad thing is I am supposed to be sleeping.

Way back in 1987, I was doing electrical work on the Sony Studios lot in Culver City, and they were filming an outdoor scene for William Conrad’s next series after Cannon, Jake and the Fatman. It was a hostage situation on the steps of the old courthouse. Joe Penny had his gun drawn on the bad guy, and William Conrad yelled, “Don’t do it, Jake!” It took them hours to film a scene that lasted minutes. That’s my TV crime drama claim to fame .

One word. TiVo. (assuming the budget allows of course)

One thing I never understood about the Columbo series was how the murderer(s) always made the mistake of thinking Columbo was a bumbling fool.
How could Columbo have risen to the ranks of being a police lieutenant without being good at his job.
Columbo’s old beat-up car, the crumpled up old raincoat, his wrinkled tie, the stogie he was smoking. They were all part of his plan to catch the murderer off guard.

I have many personal favorites, especially Father Brown, Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett), Poirot, Marple (the old version), and others. I think one of the best Catholic TV detectives is Murdoch from Murdoch Mysteries.

The gorgeous Tom Selleck in Magnum PI and then later as Jessie Stone.

Columbo is by far my favorite. Not only my favorite detective but my all time favorite TV show. The 1970s episodes. Not the later reboots. I’d also say along with the original Twilight Zone (my second all time favorite TV show) Columbo had the best guest stars of any show. Twilight Zone had many before they were well known. Columbo had them after they were established. Peter Falk himself appeared on The Twilight Zone.

It was clearly a trope, same as how Jim Rockford never carried a gun but managed to get punched out by bad guys without any permanent damage in just about every episode.

It was a good trope though.
