My favorite TV police detective

The budget does allow, but I have recognized that it is rare that I go back and watch recordings (although right now I am watching episode 2 of the HGTV Brady House renovation that originally aired Monday night).

Rockford and Magnum are a couple of favorites of mine. The two episodes of Rockford with Tom Selleck on them are classics.

My father used to watch:

Mannix

Barnaby Jones

And his favorite Columbo.

Peter Falk
had an interesting life. He had a B.A. and a Master’s degree from what I
read.
It is amazing how many years Columbo was on the air.
I would love to see the show resurrected, but I Don’t think they will ever be able to find someone that captured the character of Columbo like Peter did.

There was talk of a Columbo theatrical release movie a few years ago but nothing came of it.

Nobody mentioned probably my second favorite after Columbo, Baretta. There was something authentic about him. Both tough and tender. Great theme song and supporting characters. The father figure Billy, the colorful informant pimp Rooster, and the best of all Fred, Baretta’s beloved cockatoo.

Sargent Pepper Anderson in Police Woman
Angie Dickinson was one of my fave actresses when I was cutting teeth

Interesting story about Peter Falk from the IMDB website:

“Once when he was playing in a Little League game, the umpire called him out. Falk thought that he was safe. He pulled his glass eye out of its socket and handed it to the umpire, telling him, “Here, I think you might need this.”.”

Forgot to put in Lord Peter Wimsey of Dorothy Sayers. I am a fan of Amelia Peabody of Elizabeth Peters, but sadly that has never made it to television.

Robert Blake also played Mickey in the little rascals shirt films.

Colombo and Monk.
(Can you imagine an episode where they worked together? 😂 )

Anyone remember “McCloud”? Dennis Weaver played a deputy marshal from Taos, New Mexico who, after transporting a prisoner to New York City, stayed on as a special investigator with the NYPD. It was part of the NBC Mystery Movie series, which rotated among three different shows (including “Columbo” and “McMillan and Wife”, which starred Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James.)

And while not strictly a police detective, I love Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) on “NCIS”, though I prefer the earlier seasons.

I, too, would like to see a resurrection of the show. Perhaps they could make it about his son or daughter. Though I don’t recall if the character had a son or daughter. May it could be a nephew or niece.

Some people aren’t even sure if Columbo had a wife because she was never seen. But there are instances where other characters in some episodes say they’ve seen her which would point to him having one. He talked a lot about her and supposedly talked to her on the phone several times. As far as children it’s not clear if he had any. Unless he was an only child he most likely had nephews and nieces. He mentioned nephews a lot while interrogating the murderers but that might have just been part of his technique of softening up the murderers and earning their trust by making up or embellishing details and homey anecdotes about his wife and nephews.

I was thinking I had seen her or that she even had her own show at one time.

I have four favorites:
Brother Cadfael (He’s a 12th-century monk who solves medieval mysteries).
Monk
Fr. Brown
The Closer (Brenda Leigh Johnson) “Thank you, thank you so much…”

Yeah, the episode where both John Denver and a then-unknown Farrah Fawcett both guest starred was classic.
“Far out!” “There ya go!”

It was many years before I realized Dennis Weaver had previously appeared sans mustache as the game warden dad on “Gentle Ben”.

Also not a police detective, but I always liked Jessica Fletcher.
She was sort of my role model for getting old when I was 20.

McCloud and Columbo were once part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie. I remember well the theme song and the guy walking along shining his flashlight.
