Here’s the thing, I’ve got less than a week before re-enroll for the second semester at my college but I’ve been dreading the moment when I get to see my grades. I’ve kept telling myself I did my best and that I studied very hard for my finals but this other half of me just keeps telling me that my studying sucked and that I should just get ready for a whole universe of hurt.

What should I do? Every night this keeps haunting me now, depriving me of much-needed sleep and all the stress is making me indulge in a lot of sinful activities. I could tell my parents how I feel but they’re too caught up in our financial problems to even care. Heck, they’re probably just waiting for me to tell them the bad news so that they could take out their long list of punishments (firing me, depriving me of internet, they might even stop my tuition cuz my screw-up wasted their money). I wanna pray to God for help but I feel like I’ve made too many failed promises to Him already to even think about asking for a miracle.

Seriously, I need some advice. My mind is really on the verge of snapping in two and I can’t find anything that seemed to soothe these fears of mine. I think I might as well get a straitjacket ready… 😦

My best advice is for you to see a College Counselor and explain what is going on in your mind. You seem to worry too much for nothing since you don’t really know what your grades will be.

The world will not crash for you because all you have to do is to repeat your failed classes to improve your grades if that is what happens to you. You will be put on college probation until you improve your grades. Then you need to do the paper work to replace the bad grades with the good grades.

It is normal for many college students to have this problem.
Just tell yourself that you will do better next semester.
Your college information and grades are kept private even if your parents are paying for your college tuition.

My other advice is for you to stop your sinning and go to confession to get into God’s grace again. Stress is not a good reason to commit sins. That is just a lame excuse and you know it. So shape up and see a counselor for academic advise so you know where you stand with the college rules. The counselor will give you advise on how to clear up your bad grades.

I was a academic College counselor for 30yrs. and I was able to give the students great advice on how to get back on track with their college studies. So, don’t give up because God is good and is always with you. Lucy

Ok take some advice from a college grad. To me College is really overrated when it comes to the real world. To me as long as you get your degree and do fairly well in your classes thats what counts. you dont have to get an A in everything. My experience was I did great in the course’s I really enjoyed, Like History of the Church, Biblical Studies, Psychology, But struggled with classes like Math and Multi Cultural studies because they just bored me. I did just enough to pass. And trust me , its not going to matter that much if you get an A or a D In a few classes. Your not going to put all your grades on your resume , just that you graduated college .

So chill out , enjoy your time in College, Grow as a Person, study the things you love, and squeak by in those course’s your forced to take. Its not going to really matter that much… Remember that the most important study is of God.

God bless

I had the same sort of fear. When waiting for my final classification, I used to have dreams every other night or so that I had failed.

Is there anything you can do about the grades now? No. So start planning for a worst-case scenario, and then take it from there. If you are failing classes, it is because you have not been given:
  1. The correct material to study
  2. The correct methods to study with
If you have these things, and are still failing, then you need to take a look at the work you do, and consider whether or not you could do a whole lot more, since evidently you need the study time.

One of the best things that I learnt was that I often didn’t do well in a class because I just didn’t put enough effort in. It might sound simple, but I assumed I could just put minimal effort and get great grades. Real life doesn’t work that way 🙂

God Bless,

If your parents are paying for your tuituon, they have a right to expect you to study and get good grades.

Should you care more about doing “sinful things” than studying, get a job to pay your own way.

Study, apply yourself, don’t party, pray.

I’m betting you passed, unless (as Magicsilence said) your materials and/or methods aren’t adequate. If that’s how it turns out, does your school have help available to improve your methods?

I don’t know how colleges in the Philippines do things, so take this for what it is worth. Here in the US, our study load is determined by “credit hours.” A normal course was 3 credit hours; less studying and class time was one or two, and more was 4.

We can sign up for more or less. If I remember correctly, a full-time student meant 18 credit hours minimum. I thought I should be able to handle 21, but I couldn’t even manage 18. (I had undiagnosed ADD.)

Perhaps, if your grades turn out bad, you should carry less of a load.

I’m betting that you will do fine. Your writing on the forums is great (says the English prof’s daughter), so you will probably do well in any course that involves writing a paper. If you have a knack for math, the other courses should do great, too.

Do let us know how it turns out, please! We all care!

God bless you,

Ruthie

Hope you have now got your grades and that you have passed.

One year I gave my mother all my books and notes after an exam so I wouldn’t go through them and convince myself I had failed by checking out every mistake I had made (it was a foreign language paper). In doing this I was recognising my habit of focussing on what I get wrong or can’t do rather than rather than what I can do.

If you have this habit to a geater or lesser extent, this may account for some of your anxiety.

Consider seeing a counsellor to learn some techniques for dealing with stress, or if you have done this before, go back for a refresher.

Also if you have passed use this experience as an opportunity to learn how to study more effectively and learn to deal with stress better. These are valuable life skills.

Best wishes.
