Hello all,

I’m a professional artist who recently decided to try my hand at Sacred Art. I’d like to do Sacred/Liturgical art for a living, and am starting to build a portfolio of work. We’ll see how that goes.

Obviously it’s a painting of “Christ with the Crown of Thorns.” It is 16x20 inches in oil paint on linen.

I painted the blood in today, and may have to go back into it after it’s dry, depending upon how it looks. So it may not be “completely” done yet.

Hopefully the color is correct on other’s monitors; I’m a painter, not a photographer or photoshop image editor! 🙂

Let me know what you think!

Wow! I really like that. It has a new, modern look and yet it has an old, vintage look. Very nice. The colors are beautiful, and I like the glow around His head. The background is nice, too. It looks like those vintage paintings of Jesus from the 40’s. My only complaint, and it’s a really small one, is I think the Lord’s beard should be a bit longer. Other than that, it would make a great holy card. Keep up the good work. 🙂

I think it’s a beautiful likeness. Please continue to post your work here.

It’s hard to say since most of us have pretty ingrained notions of what Christ should look like.
Your artistry is very good. If I were to say anything negative, it would be that in my opinion He looks a bit “buff” for the suffering Lord, if ya know what I mean, LOL.
We’re so accustomed to seeing Our Lord is more lean, fragile sort of way…not to say that your interpretation would not be warmly received.

God bless you and your art. I’m sure it is quite pleasing to Our Lord. Anytime we use our talents to glorify God, it is a good and worthy thing.

I don’t think a “buff” Jesus is so bad. My only thing is that his face looks a bit too European or thick or maybe it’s that the beard is a little too clean and trimmed, idk… Otherwise it’s really a great work.

BTW, any reason why you chose red for the cloak instead of purple? I assume its’ more to emphasize the sacrifice?

This was my thought as well.Beautiful work, but not the way our Lord is usually portrayed.

Ooh I love it! 🙂 Your Jesus is very handsome. I’m not too worried about the buffness. The Jesus on the cross at our church looks like a body builder too.

I would keep at it. I’m sure a lot of people would love to have a piece of your artwork.

I really like the way you’ve portrayed Jesus. Please continue to post your work.

The “buffer” Jesus reminds me of Rubens.
If I needed to fill up a church with art, I’d definitely be looking at this.

EDIT: Sort of on that note, I have no artistic talent whatsoever, but I’m still interested in the process of painting something like this? How long did it take you?

Er, I’m not exactly artistic (I can draw stick figures and koalas, that’s it), but I think your painting is awesome. Keep up the good work, and don’t bury that talent in the ground! 👍

Wow, I think you did a really good job. What a gift 🙂
I actually like the more muscular looking depictions of the Lord, especially when He’s being depicted during the passion. I guess practically, he was a laborer and so was probably stronger than some, but I see a spiritual significance in it as well; God, the strong(est) one, whose word could flatten the world, exercised such humility and allowed Himself to suffer; and seeing a big, muscular, Christ crowned with thorns is a good reminder of that for me.

I love it, including the buff body!

He was in all likelihood buffbodied; and the Passion didn’t last long enough to change that.

👍👍 and ICXC NIKA

:tiphat: welldone!!

its always nice to see people use their talents for the Lord!

Consider yourself lucky that I’m not much of an art critic (I don’t think I should judge if I cannot do it myself)

But in my opinion it looks great and I see nothing it needs changing on.

Wow! 👍 Love it, as someone else said, it’s got both this modern and more traditional part to it. The drape of the red garment is really cool too. Keep up the good work. 🙂

Fantastic piece of work, well done. It must taken been hours & hours days & days

Certainly doesn’t look remotely like ‘trad’ Jesus ( a trucker?) but then Jesus is Everyman so he could be a stevedore as well as a shepherd. Carpenters are pretty tough as well. Perhaps you could do a series - Black Jesus, Chinese Jesus, Eskimo Jesus etc. Our trad. image of Jesus as a white blue-eyed Anglo-Saxon is all wrong. He was probably a small darky swarthy little guy much like present-day Arab from that desert region. Certainly not a tall cool dude.
Anyway a magnificent 1st attempt - Congrats!
