Hello,

My wife and I traveled to the Archdiocese next door for a family HS graduation (nephew). Of course I have never felt comfortable in my wife’s hometown parish the last several years due to a high level of “progressive feel” to the way they do things during the liturgy. The small things like greet you neighbor, comradere before mass, introductions to the entire “cast” of the Celebration, the 10 “Eucharistic” ministers that enter the sanctuary beofere the agnus dei, the happy clappy chior up front singing hagen hass while the entire congregation stares at the ceiling, etc. etc. etc. I was married in this church and it is a very well kept 100 year old gothic style large church. In fact it can be classified by Gorgeous two steeples that can be seen from miles away etc.etc… Thank God they didn’t ruin the church…just the liturgy… I always put up with the little things out of respect for my dear Mother in law who is a nice quiet pew sitting member of this parish. Never have I commented on my dislike for things. In fact this church seats around 800 people and it is always packed…but for the life of me I constantly have the feeling of dread whenever I attend mass there. Honestly the people in the pews are like zombies during the liturgy. The lack of reverence is by far the worst thing about this parish. Lots of poorly chosen clothing…too much skin…YIKES. anyway I managed to suffer through the Mass when Lo and behold when communion was done the priest sat down and I could hear some music coming from a CD player…I thought to myself hmm that is strange…when All of the sudden a woman dressed in a toga with a piece of purple streamer goes prancing by me down the main isle towards the altar. I was absolutely stunned at what I did next. Like a reflex…I stood up and ran out of the church right down the main isle…I did it without even thinking about it…it just happened. I ran out onto the plaza of the church and just stood there with my hands on my head…I gathered myself waited for about 5 minutes and walked back inside the church just as a huge applause happened. I waited for the final blessing then slipped out again and waited for my wife and family…It was likely the creepiest thing that has ever happened to me in a church…I told my wife that I will have a very hard time attending mass there again. Knowing how I feel about such things she almost had to console me. I never thought I would react in such a way…It was very strange.

I don’t suppose it would help you to know I might have run as well…or giggled and pointed.

I feel your pain thats worse than my hound dog in the church moment, but since that was my first mass and since im not really Catholic all I can say is stay strong.

I understand completely. When I moved, I attended a new Parish one Sunday and upon entering the Church, I realized it had no kneelers, no stained glass, no saints statues, no tabernacle. I stood in the vestibule for 8 minutes with my heart pounding out of my chest and fighting back tears. I wasn’t sure I could even enter the Church I was so distressed. I know exactly how you felt and it’s awful!

Or even much worst! I’m sorry but, I would probably have been arrested for what I would have done. And even worst, the loss of my soul for what I might have said or done to such a priest for allowing it.😦 Shouldn’t this be reported to the Archdiocese?!?! I’m sorry but I have never been exposed this sort of thing & it makes my blood boil! Now you done it, I have to go to confession ASAP!

The Archdiocese probably wrote the script. I am sure if I wrote the archbishop he would be happy to know that his style is implemented.

I am sorry too. I am also sorta sorry for bolting. But it was not a thought out thing…it was like a reflex. I just get a feeling of dread when I attend Mass at this place. Strangely the pews are full but the congregation is like a bunch of Zombies. The spiritual Emptyness is almost palpable. It is my opinion that this parish has a larger than normal number of simply cultural Catholics who really have no idea why they are there at Mass. It is obivious by thier facial expressions and mannerisms while inside the church for Sunday Mass.

I’ve bolted once. I was at a parish for Good Friday services and I began to feel uneasy when the priest came down the aisle and sat in the front pew. He never went into the sanctuary during the time I was there. When the Passion was read, it was by a group of about 10 readers accompanied by mood lighting and chimes. When they began to read the prayers following the Passion (accompanied by mimes) I bolted. I was terrified to think what the veneration of the Cross might entail.

Wondering did you get a feeling of dread while you witnessed this? I cannot explain the feeling I got when I saw jezebel prancing down the isle. If I would have witnessed the “liturgy” that you witnessed I would have likely needed Therapy:p

Although the absurdity of all this is kinda funny, this is just about the saddest thing I have heard all day. :crying: How dare they treat the Holy Sacrifice with such disregard. I would have had the exact same reaction that you had.

I’m sorry you had to deal with this. However, if this is only the first time you’ve had to deal with this - you are VERY lucky.

I have never witnessed a demonstration of Liturgical Dance. :extrahappy:

I pray to Christ that I never will. :gopray::signofcross:

I’ve seen Liturgical dance. It didn’t bother me. The rest of the church bothered me. The priest actually did a litany which drew row after row of scowls and later, at a cafe, bellowed protests which ended on a “next thing is he’ll be asking us to say the Hail Mary.”

Waddupwidat rage? I was really quite weirded out.

Thing is I saw a dance portion at a Messianic Jewish service. And that had a much holier sensibility to it than the one I saw in the church. A very holy sensibility.

So there must be some sort of basis in Tradition for Liturgical dance. Thoughts?

Even though liturgical dance is wrong and shouldn’t be done, I would never dare label the person doing so (who I’m sure had decent intentions) with jezebel.
From wikipedia:

The name Jezebel has come down through the centuries to be used as a general name for all wicked women. Jezebel is portrayed in modern usage as a controlling whore in such phrases as “painted Jezebel.” *

Calling someone a whore is unacceptable. It is this kind of sarcasm that makes the orthodox and obedient lose credibility.

Well, I’ve heard of Liturgical Dance, but never experienced it. After reading your experience, I don’t think I want to either. Fortunately, in my area of the country (Southeast) not much of this seems to be going on. It certainly hasn’t happened in my parish.

When I saw this thread, I went and got a cup of java. I knew it was going to be rather heated. If I can hold hands during the Our Father, you can sit through a dance. Remember, it is the Eucharist that binds us, not the hand holding or the wave.

PS
My prayers are with you.

Hand holding during the Our Father is not permitted and neither is liturgical dancing. Remember OBEDIENCE is the pathway to Heaven.

I am no fan of liturgical dance. It’s forbidden and so be it.

But if you ask me, some of the emotional outbursts expressed in this thread are wilder than the liturgical dancing.

just a curious thought,

would it really be wrong to Call it out during Mass?

To stand up and voice the truth? I understand some may see it as being “holier than thou” but at what point is enough enough?

While I don’t agree with the hand holding or the liturigical dance, Why isn’t the Pope coming down hard on these practices???

Hand holding during the Our Father has become such a common practice…the Pope has to obiviously know about this.

The rock n roll music too? I thought the Pope wanted to do away with this type of music.
