 First off Im not hear to bash the church I’ve come very close to becoming a catholic untill this morning actually. And with some encouragement may still be I dont really know now! Second off I got some questions Are dogs normally in the church when the eucharist is being celebrated? Me and my family go to Mass to check it out ,were singing with everybody else, everythings going good when I here the unmistakable sound of little beagle paws on the floor look down and there it was a hound dog in the church!!! I try to shrugg it off , then to top it off, after the mass we are told to stick around to watch AL GORES new movie An Inconvenient Truth to raise money for the youth group AHHHHH!!!

I hate to be a stick in the mudd but its people like MR Gore who brought us ABORTION, GAY RIGHTS, and all other sorts of abominations. Yes I am conservative, and I dont care if it were a movie made by a Republican I dont want politics in my church. And I know there are those of you who see nothing wrong with mr Gores movie, who will say its not political its about the enviroment or that Mr Gore does not support abortion YEA RIGHT!!! Its people like you who vote for people like him who gave us these wonderfull things AHHHH!!! Its like saying well Hitler was a bad guy killed alot of people but he gave us the autobann:shrug:

But really is this normal? hound dogs and Al Gore, because if it is then I will keep my distance. If not then some encouragement would be appreciated by you good Catholic Christians. I will be checking this post with anticiapation…

Your experience sounds pretty extreme. I have never seen dogs in church and it certainly sounds rather… uhm, bad, for lack of a better word.
I cannot comment on the Al Gore movie. It is not so unusual to announce some upcoming event and invite the congregation, and it is acceptable, depending on the event planned. I detest politics in church, and political campaigns even more - I don’t think I am alone with this sentiment.

BUT: I wouldn’t draw any other conclusion from this. As I said, dogs are not the norm… I wonder what other parishioners thought of it?
If you are uncomfortable with the parish, look for another one if you can (distance etc). The fact that you have had bad experience with one parish does not mean that all the rest is the same! Find a church where you like the way people behave, believe me, there are such parishes.

I am so sorry you had this experience. Al Gore’s movies and dogs are NOT the norm for the Mass, I assure you.

If you PM me your town or city, I will do my best to find you a local Mass that fills the normative requirements of the Mass.

I have NO idea why a dog was in the church during Mass. If had been a blessing of the animals, that might be a different matter. Maybe the poor thing just wandered in? I would hope the ushers would have escorted the pooch out.

I too would be incensed at the announcement of Al Gore’s propaganda piece being shown at the parish to raise money for the youth group. And if I was a member of that parish I’d let the parish council and the youth leaders know it!

I’m terribly sorry your first Mass was spoiled for you by such experiences. Believe me, they are NOT the norm! If that parish is a dissenting/heterodox one, sadly there are some out there, then don’t attend Mass there. Find one that conducts the Mass with reverence. I’m sure you’ll have an entirely different impression after attending at one that does. 😉

Do you live in a pretty liberal area? I’m in Los Angeles so I wouldn’t be all that surprised by the Al Gore movie being shown, but it would also make me feel very, very angry to have that movie being pushed down our throats at church. We get a lot of anti-war stuff, anti-death penalty and pro-illegal immigration stuff at church already. I’m a conservative in Los Angeles which already makes me feel really isolated. And the last place I want to be made to feel even more isolated is at church. I don’t imagine that Catholic churches are like that all over the country, though. And even in LA LA land, I’ve never seen a dog at church! You must be in San Francisco or Seattle or something? Hehe! (Just poking fun!)

Thanks for your replys:) , I dont know about the dog, it was the priests I think. They just lead him in by the alter and a woman held his leash till mass was over. It was wierd to say the least.

I am glad to hear that im not the only one who would not like the political movies and here is the details from the bullitin that was handed out.

VERY SPECIAL EVENT PLANNED FOR St .________ AFTER MASS TODAY. Please plan to stay after Mass today to watch the showing of “An Inconvienient Truth” ________ ___________ from , who recieved training from the Climate Project, a nonprofit, grass-roots organization formed by former Vice President Al Gore to send representatives throughout the United States and other countries to educate and energize the public and governments to take action against the growing crisis of global warming and to work toward solutions of the crisis, will be speaking after the movie and will be avaliable to answer any questions you might have. As a fundraiser, St. Youth Group will be selling snacks and drinks at this event.

Again thanks for the replys and glad to hear thats not normal:)

I’ve only seen a dog in the church during mass once, and he was an assistance dog for a disabled person - a totally legit reason. Perhaps this dog was an assistance dog for the priest, like a siezure-alert dog.

Two things.

Firstly about the dog - quite possibly the priest or one of the servers is losing or has partialy lost their sight needs a guide dog. It is possible to still serve at the altar even if you can’t see terribly well, but you may need a dog to get around outside the church.

About Al Gore - he brought about abortion and gay rights? No, Roe v Wade 30-some years ago brought about legalised abortion. Illegal abortion has been around since the time of the Apostles. Gay rights? There are very few American states (note - Al Gore was a federal politician not a state one) that give any sort of recognition to gay relationships. And if I remember rightly most of the recognition has happened on George W’s watch and not Gore’s in any event.

And ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is not about anything like either of those issues anyway - if he’s wrong about gays and abortion doesn’t make his message on the environment any less true - we ARE stuffing things up, even if not to the extent of global warming, and we DO need to think about how we look after our planet - we’re going to have to account for the resources we waste.

I am happy to report that, after PMing with offshore, the church attended by offshore’s family this morning was not union with the Bishop of Rome- in fact, this parish makes a big to-do on its web site about NOT being in union with Rome, but wanting all our bells and whistles. It claims to be “oversighted” by the World Wide Church of Culdee.

Offshore now knows where to find the bishop for the Asheville area, and real Catholic parishes.

Well- I thought that, until I found out there is a nearby parish in a SUBURB (who should know better than I) that IS Catholic and has the same name as the non-Catholic parish!!!

Nonetheless, the OP has been pointed to Catholic parishes and the diocese.

First off to LillyM I did not come here to rangle about politics with you! if thats what (you think) and how (you vote) that is between you and God, I dont care.My main point was that politics should be kept out of religion, but really dont you think sending a representative from crazy Al’s enviromental group is a little out of bounds  To the others thank you for pointing me in the right direction:D

OK, I don’t understand why this got moved to Traditional Catholic, but who knows?

In any event, the family in question has been pointed to the Bishop of Charlotte (that’s where they live, in the diocese of Charlotte), and if they desire a Latin Mass, to the long drive to Raleigh.

I was at Christmas Mass a few years ago and a woman (who struck me as an Easter/Christmas Catholic) had her dog there in the pew. First and only time I’d ever seen that!

And as for the Al Gore movie - you obviously went to a very liberal parish. They’re probably big into social activism, and they probably think that the Democratic platform is an exact translation of the Gospel into the current era.

Don’t judge based on this one extreme example. You owe it to yourself to get a more balanced impression.

Thanks to ChgoBurbs for researching this and helping the OP. That’s very good of you.

When I heard “Al Gore,” my first thought was, “THIS church is not in union with Rome.”

In our diocese, the bishop issued the “edict” this week that those who showed up to Mass wearing the “rainbow sash” would NOT receive Communion, not because of their homosexuality, but because it is NOT appropriate to politicize the Mass.

I realize that the Al Gore movie was being shown outside of Mass, and that Al Gore is now a private citizen, not a politician, but I think that nevertheless, his name is synonymous with politics. He is our former Vice President and was a Presidential candidate. There is still talk that he might run again (although I think it’s just talk). I think that a legitimate Catholic Church could find other environmental or global warming presentations to show that would not suggest “politics.”

Since others have mentioned seeing-eye dogs and other assisting dogs, I should clarify that this woman had no disabilities, and the dog was a little white fru-fru lapdog. I think Elegant Ladies sometimes used to bring their little lap-dogs to Mass in the distant past, didn’t they?

I very sorry about your first Mass. My heart goes out to you. This is not the norm. When you go to Mass, it should be reverent and holy. It’s about you and God. There are many good Catholic Churches. Don’t give up. Also, Al Gore is not appropriate. There are some many decent movies for young people “Rudy”, “Song of Bernadette”, “St. Therese” etc…
Please find another Catholic Church. PLEASE contact Monsignor Gabriele Caccia, Assessor. he is the US diplomatic representation from the Vatican. The Pope needs to know about this and other concerns.

Also, you will receive a response. I have already written about my concerns.

Al Gore at one time was pro-life, as was Jesse Jackson. Gore was also a moderate, sensible and family friendly kind of senator.
But when he became Clinton’s VP, he did a total 180 and has become quite radical. He is an extreme pro abortionist and has totally turned his back on his moderate past.

I think he’s scary.

Absolutely.

Again, sorry to harp on the Al Gore thing, but you seem to be preaching separation between Church and State here (ie that political matters should never mix with out faith lives). Doesn’t work that way for a true Christian, our faith is an essential part of our political formation.

So engaging with environmental issues (outside the Mass itself at least) is an entirely legitimate and indeed essential thing to do. Not that you’re obliged to agree with Gore, but if the movie makes you think about it a little then it’s worthwhile.

Can you please provide evidence for this statement, no there is none to give:thumbsup: there are quite a few scientist who say its balogne. There was an small ice age in medieval times but there were no SUV’s, trains planes or automobiles it was nature or God directing nature. This is the new religon of the Godless, and Al Gore is there Pope a blind man could see it. And speaking of blind no this was a beagle dog about 4-5" off the ground about the only thing there good for is rabbit hunting, or as a pet. not a seeing eye dog I looked twice to make sure:)

Not all assistance dogs are for the blind. Siezure-alert dogs, for instance, alert their person when the person is about to have a siezure. The vast majority of the time these dogs just lay nearby and look like they’re not doing anything.

I know that it would be against our culture, most places in the States, to have a dog at mass, and for that reason we should not, just for the fun of it, bring our pets to mass. Is there a rule recorded somewhere, though, that forbids it? Just curious.

No, the chauffer held them until Madame was finished with her worship.

RE: Algore (Yes, that’s how we spell his name here)- “Conservationism” and “showing stewardship for what God has given” are not the liberal propaganda in “An Inconvenient Truth”. In fact, “Inconvenient Truth” is rather an convenient concoction of half-truths and false science without merit. Please remember this is the same person who claimed to be the Father of the Internet (don’t think so). Whatever he used to be, he is not that now. His views on abortion and gay nonmarriage really preclude him being an effective example for Catholics, particularly as a presentation by the youth group.
