As a marred man ***my minasry if you will is to my wife and children first. ***So you can see were this would get less attention than public menistry.

I always thought that my first ministry is to the will of God, to give praise and worship to God.

No, you were right. God first, then wife, then kids.

Has any person ever thought they could get to heaven through Mary?

Your highest duty and loyalty is always to God, but your primary “ministry” would be to your children if you are a parent. You owe it to your God to worship Him above all other things, but you owe it to your children to transmit your faith to them and teach them to love and worship God.

God does not call a parent to abandon his/her children to join a monastary and spend a life in prayer for example. However, having children does not excuse a person from praying, worshiping, attending mass, etc. I don’t believe that being a good parent and being a faithful child of God are mutually exclusive.

I believe that being a person of strong faith can enhance being a great parent. I have a friend who repeats to herself that she is changing the world one diaper at a time. She dedicates herself to growing in holiness through her vocation as a mother which I believe is pleasing to God since He gave her that vocation.

God asks all parents at all times to give their children over to Him. Children are His gift to parents and they must always remember that, and not fall into the trap of regarding them as possessions or treating them as idols–both very common failings in our society leading to much evil. Our duty as parents is yes to feed, clothe, shelter, educate and support them, but we do all these things so they may grow to know, love and serve God.

God gives each of us a specific vocation - a calling to a way of life that will lead directly to Him. In the common usage of the word, a vocation can mean a calling to priesthood or religious life. In an equally valid usage, it means a calling to marriage, parenthood, a certain profession, etc. So one does not need to choose between God and one’s children as you have asked in the first post. It is through ministering to your children that you fulfill your duties to God and come to Him. You make your work holy by doing it well and offering it to God. You make yourself holy by doing your work this way. You can help the whole world by making an offering of yourself and your work this way. This is service to God - fulfilling your obligations as a parent, spouse, engineer, doctor, teacher, clerk, or whatever.
