I attended my first Missa Normativa last Sunday. It was my first encounter with the Gregorian chants. I must say, it’s very awesome!

It had elements of both the Tridentine and Novus Ordo. Maybe it was because of the church how the altar was set up. I mean during consecration, the priest had to face front and turn his back towards the audience. Communion was also done the same way I had it when I attended the Tridentine Mass.

I liked my first Latin Mass just as much as my first Tridentine Mass. I can’t wait to experience an Orchestral Latin Mass.

Where was this? Detroit by chance?

Nay, St. John Cantius parish in Chicago. They never say Mass in English in this church… it’s always Latin be it Tridentine or Novus Ordo. The altar is also so amazing… It’s so… Catholic! It’s filled with images and paintings… crosses all over… the smell of incense, the atmosphere. It’s so… uhm, say old-fashioned? It’s just so wonderful. Hopefully, I can take a picture of it someday and post it here.

would someone please explain to me the Missa Normativa? I have heard this phrasing before but have yet been able to grasp a coherent answer as to what it is…

Missa Normative is just another name for the current missal, AKA Novus Ordo.

At St John Cantius parish, they actually have masses in English, at 10 AM on Sundays, but even these are quite traditional still.

Ooops, my mistake. Yes they do have 1 English Mass everyday and the rest are in Latin.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

St John Cantius is the crown jewel of Latin rite parishes in the Chicago Archdiocese (in my opinion). I would encourage anyone visiting Chicago to try to check it out! The parish is centrally located on the near north side and easy to reach by expressway.

Two other fine tradition-minded parishes I know of are St John Vianney (Cure’ d’Ars) in Northlake and St. Thomas More in Chicago. (I am sure there are others, but these are notable).

I also very much appreciate the Monastery of the Holy Cross on 31st street, an element of the Subiaco congregation (this in spite of the fact that I am an Oblate-candidate with another monastery). This monastic establishment is very traditional and also appreciates and promotes the Eastern churches. The Archdiocese has been encouraging these fine men in their vocation by allowing them the property of a fine old neighborhood church with traditional Gothic architecture.

My priest, Father Tom of the Byzantine-Ruthenian Catholic church will lead Great Vespers at the monastery (according to Byzantine practice) on Monday Sept 13 at 7:00 PM with the Schola Cantorum of Saint Peter’s in the Loop a well known Schola that has recorded extensively.

If you are tradition minded and appreciate good liturgy I encourage you to avail yourself of these opportunities to explore and appreciate the richness, depth and diversity of Catholic practice and devotion.

Dont forget the Opus Dei ran St. Mary of the Angels. I heard their mass is quite solid, much like the English mass at St John Cantius I suppose.
