My first RCIA lesson

Yesterday I went to my first RCIA lesson and the room felt so peaceful and went well until I saw a Pentecostal friend there who has no intention of becoming a Catholic but used the excuse of trying to understand Catholicism so he can save him along with Jehovah Witness and Mormons. He totally ruined the day and I think he brought along two fake people (who are pentecostal and speak in tongues) to mess up the 6 month course for everyone.
 
Can you give some examples of what they did to disrupt the class?

Even if he is only there essentially to be a troll, don’t write him of completely. I’ve heard multiple stories of people who got involved with Catholic apologetics in an attempt to undermine them or to refute them, but who eventually wound up converting because they could not deny the Truth they found. Perhaps God is using this to lead these individuals to the Church, even if they don’t quite realize it yet.

To be honest, if they’re there to just be annoying then they’ll soon get bored and stop coming.

Could be that even if they are currently there for the wrong reasons, it maybe that a seed is planted which might mean one day they will be there
for the right reasons.
 
He has been evicted by security at the Catholic conference and banned for a year at a Catholic prayer group. Because he has a few miracles he targets seminary priests and tells them not to become priests. His parents are Christian but want to be Catholic and he is coming to stop that from happening. He even sent me a message of his intentions after the meeting. He is a member of a pentecostal church and I asked him if his pastor knows he is doing this and he said yes but maybe he is lying.
 
Make the people in charge of RCIA aware of the situation and also pray for the instructors that they know the Faith and can defend it.

Yes I let both sponsor know and they will phone the priest in charge but I get the feeling that they want to be non confrontational. One of the sponsors was in tears afterwards and couldn’t sleep because of him.
 
This situation needs to be brought to the Pastor, immediately!
No one should be making anyone cry and unable to sleep after a RCIA session.
 
The reality is your are there for your own journey. Do not get side tracked by someone else’s journey. Experienced RCIA directors have probably seen something like this before and know how to handle it.

For myself, I wouldn’t get involved. During the time of inquiry you should be focusing on what YOU are getting out of it, not someone else’s agenda.

Well I spoken to the people who need to know- really appreciate you all pray about this situation. Really felt peaceful despite it all and the Fr was lovely.
 
I agree with other posters that say to let Pastor and RCIA team leaders know. There is no reason to allow somebody to not only disrupt, but to be there to intentionally sow seeds of doubt and confusion among the people who are actually interested in being there. I don’t see this as something that will just go away, chances are they have practiced their schtick and if somebody is even on the fence about whether to become Catholic or not may have that faith doubted by somebody that can open their Bible to the right chapter and verse and say “see doesn’t this make a lot more sense than what Father is saying?”
 
Give those in charge a copy of the email you received…that way they know what you’re saying isn’t just hearsay. I’ll be praying for you and your class.
 
Worry not. It will all sort itself out. Allow the Holy spirit to work on the others, and don’'t let them distract you.
 
Yes the can…I witness that every year at a Catholic Conference that I go to every year.
 
Yep, I am in a little group, most of us speak in tongues, but I really question its meaningfulness at this point. As they say, God works in mysterious ways.

Having never witnessed or experienced tongues, I’m interested in finding out if people actually speak real languages? For example, have you witnessed anybody speak in Russian or Mongolian etc
 
You can find a Charismatic Catholic prayer group/ conference and ask that you desire the gift of tongues and they will lay hands on you.
 
I don’t know any other languages, so I couldn’t say. It would be interesting to get an ancient and modern languages expert in to listen though 🙂

But then if the Holy Spirit wants interpretation, He will make that interpretation possible.

It’s something I have struggled with for a while now. I am only recently starting to be at peace with it

You can get tongues gift without laying on of hands. All you need do is ask. Then it’s up to God’s Will.

There are people who get laying on hands who still don’t speak in tongues. It’s all up to the Will of God.

Maybe we are speaking a defunct Indigenous language. Hmm.

You’re the student. THe RCIA Director will handle any issues that come up. Focus on your own learning. God bless you. Welcome home.
