I’m driving a friend to the airport very early tomorrow morning, and on my way back I’m going to try to catch the 6:45 AM Low Mass at St. Gianna’s Latin Mass community here in Tucson. What should I expect? How can I get the most out of, and put the most into, the Extraordinary Form? Any advice specific to St. Gianna’s from one who has attended Mass there would be especially helpful.

Thanks, and peace be with you!

According to the website the early morning Mass is actually at 6:30 AM and not 6:45. You may want to verify or get there early just in case.

Other than that I can offer a couple of pieces of advice:

First, I wouldn’t try to hard to follow along in a Missal if you have one or if they have any available. The first few times you go just concentrate on what is going on at the altar.

If you find yourself going back very often then the ability to find your place in the Missal with ease and without thought will probably come naturally.

Second, I don’t know that this is a possibility but you may want to find a Missa Cantata (or “High Mass”) to attend at some point. Some people prefer the Low Mass but for most the High Mass will be easier to follow and is just a much more beautiful experience in my opinion.

Also, Una Voca has these red booklets that make it so easy to follow along. I prefer them to my missal when it comes to ease of use during the Mass. You can purchase them for about five bucks and most chuches I have been to have them put out to borrow for free. The Una Voca website also has the propers for the day you can print out. For a low mass specifically, there is a booklet called How to Serve Low Mass and Benediction for under five dollars at Amazon and Angelus Press. This is good to read beforehand so that if you get distracted (say by your children) you can find your bearings.

How did it go?
