(That I can remember!) I was born in '62 so I probably attended Latin Masses, but today is the first one I’ve attended as an adult.

It was beautiful. I was very impressed by the extreme reverence for the host. It seemed to be treated much better than what I experience every Sunday.

It also seems to make the vocation of the priesthood something to aspire to. If I had seen that growing up, who knows? Maybe I would have considered the seminary?

We have the Traditional Latin Mass once a month here. Another FSSP is supposed to come to the state which may mean we can have it weekly 🙂

I began to use a Latin /English missal to PRAY the Mass about two years ago because I was always getting upset at the parish Mass because I could recognize the liturgical abuses and then the pastor did not preach the Gospel but on his political views. It helped to pray the missal and so I became familiar with the Mass.

I think the TLM takes some getting used to. We only have a low Mass at this time and the silence is a change from the novus ordo. I hope we can get to the Missa Cantata as I would love to be able to sing the ‘common’ parts of the Holy Mass.

But I long for reverence. I see the need to return to the norm of Holy Communion on the tongue while kneeling. It is a joy to receive Our Lord this way!

Our common manner of receiving the Bread of Life with hands that are often not washed and the allowance of crumbs to fall on hands and clothes and floor would have given some of the saints a heart attack! Yes, their hearts would break with sadness and then the great loss of faith in the Real Presence that has ensued.

Change the Liturgy, change the world, it is said. I agree.

funny that you should mention that. since the moto proprio young man have been filling the seminarians.
i also agree with you about how the Host is treated.
what i love best about it the most is that the sanctuary is given completely back to the priest, and i always know i am receiving communion by consecrated hands.

Well this was a newly ordained priest. He did his first mass the week before out in the midwest, and this was his first mass in his hometown back in PA.

I don’t know where he will go from here.

I believe that’s true, offering the (TLM) Mass attracts me to the priesthood, the Novus Ordo repulses me from it though.

Where abouts in PA?

This was Saint Anastasia Parish in Marple Newton, PA. Directly west of Philly about…10 miles? Route 3 and Radnor Rd.

My first time in that church.

edit: I was sent this link of a blogger (I don’t usually ready any blogs) this blogger takes photos of Latin Masses and he was there. Scroll down to the link about Priest’s first mass in his home parish:

we’ll have TL mass next 2 weeks by a newly ordained priest from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter; however, the mass is at 10:00am during weekday - an odd time for me to attend.

It seems that lots of bishops are passively / aggressively making it hard for the TLM to flourish. (weekday 10 AM Mass?!)
I’ll bet they wouldn’t think of holding a raffle or a bingo game at 10 am or a weekday!

One guy out here announced one and planned it and it was squashed by the powers above. Still not sure why.

I echo the passive-aggressive thing.

In the parish in which I grew up, it was at 7:30 AM on Sundays.

Luckily the one I attend now is at 1:30 PM on Sundays, which makes it much easier, especially considering I have to drive an hour to get there!

I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed your first memorable Tridentine Mass. If you would ever like to write up a reflection on the event, I would love to post it on my website, which specifically concerns Traditional Catholicism.

God bless

Keep in mind that the Extraordinary Form is not a panacea for vocations.

The first big wave of priests AND bishops who left their ministries were raised on and trained in this rite and celebrated it almost exclusively.

I think this is awful. I hope you don’t become a priest. What a terrible thing to say!-that you are “repulsed” by a Mass form that the Church and our Holy Father has declared good and acceptable. What an insult to all the faithful and orthodox priests and bishops who celebrate the OF Mass! What a lack of love for all the dear laypeople who love and worship and recieve our Lord Jesus at the OF Mass!

Jesus Himself allows Himself to be present at the OF Mass, and gives us graces when we serve at this Mass.

Sir, you need to learn some RESPECT for the Catholic Church.

I would venture to say that you are not attracted to the priesthood, which is sacrifice for Christ and His Church. You are attracted to a showcase of traditionalism.

Whoa!

Not agreeing does not give you the right to say things like this!

You do not know what is in that man’s heart, nor do you know how God may be calling him.

If you need a battleground for the traditional versus the new, start a thread for that.

Maybe OP is repulsed by the insane amount of choices to be made in the NO. Maybe he’s repulsed by the attitude of the laity in parishes where the NO is. Maybe he is repulsed by the abuses that are often done to the NO. Maybe he is repulsed by the thought of the NO being offered sub-par and not to the rubrics, and not under the guidance of the Council (Chant and Latin to retain pride of place).

We ought to extend Christian charity to this young man.

And, if a liberal should say “I am repulsed by the TLM”, I should hope you would give him/her Christian charity, or at least be consistent and attack that person for their “insulting” and “disrespectful” comments.

I would say that I AM extending Christian charity to this young man by pointing out the truth, that the OF Mass is recognized and accepted by the Catholic Church, and that many faithful and orthodox priests and laypeople are involved with the OF Mass, and also that Jesus Himself is Present at the OF Mass.

Do you actually think he should be praised for making the statement, “The Novus Ordo repulses me from it, though?” That, IMO, would NOT be extending Christian charity. That would be deceiving him, and encouraging him to continue to hold himself above a valid, efficacious form of the Mass allowed by the Catholic Church and celebrated publicly by the Holy Father.

I think he should be called out on the carpet for that statement, and that’s exactly what I did.

And you, poster, should also be called out on the carpet. The “insane amount of choices to be made in the NO” are allowed by the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Jesus Christ’s established Church on this earth. Who exactly are YOU to tell them that they are allowing something that is “insane?”

And how do YOU know what the “attitude of the laity in the parishes where the NO is?” Do you know the heart of all mankind? I think not. This is a hateful statement.

If the young man is repulsed by the abuses that are often done to the NO, then let him say that. The abuses are not the same as the NO itself. People insult and ridicule Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and heap all manner of abuse and insults upon Him, but that does NOT negate His Majesty and make Him less than Who He is.

The Council has stated that Latin and chant deserve “pride of place.” What EXACTLY does that mean? What percentage of the OF Mass should be in Latin, and what percentage of the music should be chant? The “Council” has NOT made this clear. To imply that OF Masses that include no Latin or no chant are sub-par or not according to the rubrics or not under the guidance of the “Council” is incorrect and an injustice to all the priests and bishops who are following the very flexible rubrics of the OF of the Mass.

This young man is thinking about the priesthood. I personally will hold him to a much higher standard than a “liberal” layperson. It is unfortunate that a layperson would have a less-than-complete comprehension of the two forms of the Holy Mass, and therefore, be “repulsed” by one form or the other. But for a PRIEST to say this is simply unacceptable. He should know better.

There are too many choices in the NO. That’s simply true. They are unnecessary. Why do we need four different Eucharistic Prayers? Why do we need a Eucharistic Prayer for children, the poor, the refugees, etc, etc. The Mass should be, in the Latin Rite, the same wherever you go. This is how it was for hundreds of years. If you think those choices are OK, then please make a defense of their need.

I don’t know the heart of all mankind, but what I’ve encountered in many parishes, is an intense dislike for traditionalism, and a feeling of “rights” on the part of the laity in the parish. They have a right to EMHC, or they have a right to decorate the sanctuary with goofy **** (but don’t you DARE try to have six candles on the altar). They try to strong-arm father, and try to strong-arm the traditional faithful. My statement is not hateful at all.

You’re wrong.

If the almighty Council states that Latin and Chant are to be afforded pride of place, then all OF Masses should have at least SOME vestige of Latin or chant. Again, I’ve been to Mass in 5 different countries, and in MANY different parishes, and I RARELY find Latin or chant in the NO. So, yes, I would argue they are not “fulfilling the Council”.

I do hope that you are this firm in “correcting” and “calling out onto the carpet” liberals - regardless of vocation-status.

And, he’s not a priest. If he even does have a vocation to the priesthood, he’s got at least 7 years to go. So, at this point, he’s still laity.

I don’t have to defend it. The Holy Mother Church allows it, and that settles it. Your argument is with Holy Mother Church, not me. If Holy Mother Church takes away these choices, then that settles it, too. Perhaps older and wiser Catholics like you feel comfortable challenging Holy Mother Church. I do not feel comfortable telling Holy Mother Church that I know better than they do. I am grateful that Holy Mother Church has embraced me.

I believe that I and all mankind have no rights at all, other than a right to eternal hell for Wilful sins against God. But God, in His great mercy, loved us and died for all of us, and now offers us salvation if we follow Him.

Following Him means being part of His Body, the Church, specifically the Catholic Church, and submitting to His Authority, which He has given to the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church has established rubrics for the Holy Mass, and among those rubrics is an allowance for EMHCs as the priest, not any layman, considers necessary.

I don’t know the rubrics well enough to determine which decorations are appropriate for the altar.

As a follower of Jesus Christ with a hope of heaven, I submit to the Authority of His Church and His priests.

And BTW, not to be mean, but I’ve met up with many posters on this Board who insist that they have a “right” to TLM. Again, I believe the only “right” they have is condemnation for sin, just like me.

And also, do you really have no words other than an unprintable swear word to describe art that some priests feel is worthy of remaining in the sanctuary? There are many different kinds of art, and most of us have our own personal preferences, but that does not mean using foul language for the art that others prefer. And of course, if the priest approves, who are we to condemn his choice as ****? Is this what Traditionalists do–label that which they do not like with swear words?
If the almighty Council states that Latin and Chant are to be afforded pride of place, then all OF Masses should have at least SOME vestige of Latin or chant. Again, I’ve been to Mass in 5 different countries, and in MANY different parishes, and I RARELY find Latin or chant in the NO. So, yes, I would argue they are not “fulfilling the Council”.
And I’ve been to Mass in several states, and many different parishes, and I’ve often seen some Latin in the OF. Chant is different–there are skills involved that many people do not have, and not too many people even possess the skills to teach others. So to condemn parishes for not doing chant is like condemning a child for not singing opera. They have to be taught, and there have to be teachers.

I try to be grateful for any Mass I attend, as Jesus is Present and I am given the privilege of receiving Him. That is my reason for attending Mass.
I do hope that you are this firm in “correcting” and “calling out onto the carpet” liberals - regardless of vocation-status.
And I hope I am charitable. To be honest, I have never met a Catholic liberal in real life, and only a few that I know of regularly post on CAF. I realize that others live in areas of the U.S. or world where liberal Catholics abound, and I sympathize. I am fortunate.
And, he’s not a priest. If he even does have a vocation to the priesthood, he’s got at least 7 years to go. So, at this point, he’s still laity.
You’re right. But if he aspires to be a priest, he should start now to practice priestly virtues, including submission to Holy Mother Church. Indeed, all of us owe Holy Mother Church our allegiance, obedience, and respect in our words and deeds. To voice repulsion for a Mass form on a public forum is not, IMO, respect that any Catholic, but especially an aspiring priest, should do.

Why do we need four different Eucharistic Prayers? Why do we need a Eucharistic Prayer for children, the poor, the refugees, etc, etc.

**What’s intrinsically wrong with having different anaphorai? Eastern Churches have for centuries, though some are directed to be used for different seasons and times. Others are in some churches at the discretion of the Priest.

Furthermore, the Mozarabic Mass requires what boils down to a different anaphora every day of the year. Did you know that?

There are not, so far as I know anaphorae for refugees or the poor. Where did you get the idea that there were? And I’m under the impression that anaphorae for children (at least in the USA) will be withdrawn upon the publication of the new English edition.**

The Mass should be, in the Latin Rite, the same wherever you go.

**Why? The Latin Rite never was “the same wherever you go”–or went before 1962.

Did you actually think it WAS the same?

It wasn’t always said in the same language. For centuries, the Pian Mass was celebrated in Slavonic in certain dioceses of Croatia and in Chinese in some pleaces of China.

Did you know that?**
