I found out my friend died a couple of weeks ago. I did not know how he died, his family kept it pretty hush hush. He was in and out of jail and had been struggling with drugs since high school. He apparently recently found he would be doing time for a break in and in his suicide letter to his mom stated that he would rather be dead than living in constant misery. He also said in his note that he has always hated life. I am so upset. He purposely overdosed on medicine. I pray for his soul but I remember hearing that a suicide is an automatic hell? I am so sorry for him. He was the first boy I ever fell in love with and I will never forget him. I wish he had not ended his life no matter how much trouble he was in.

I’m sorry to hear that, Ellam. Suicide is something that friends and family just never really recover from.

I’m praying.

I am so sorry to hear this. I used to be suicidal as well. I was able to get help before I did anything to myself but my mom committed suicide last year. I know how tough it can be. Pray for your friend and just never give up hope. God knows how hard it can be, for someone living with depression. And he is merciful.

The catechism states:

Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.

2283** We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives. **

Please continue to pray for his soul. While suicide, self-murder, is a grievous sin and if done with full knowledge of it’s seriousness and with full consent of the will it is indeed a mortal sin, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that those who do such things may not be fully culpable of the seriousness of the act nor may they have full control of their mind/will. Read especially paragraphs 2282 & 2283 quoted below:

2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.

2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.

2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law. Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.

2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

Pray for your friend and entrust him to the arms of our Merciful God.

Be at peace.

I am so sorry; I can’t imagine your anguish.

Know that suicide is not an automatic ticket to Hell. God knows and loves your friend better than anyone, and has taken all of his previous suffering into account. Pray for him, and chances are you’ll see him again in Heaven.

Praying for the repose of your friend’s soul, for peace and healing in the hearts of his family and friends. As previous posters stated, it is not an automatic ticket to hell. God alone is this boy’s judge and works in ways known to Himself alone.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.

My first husband took his own life at home.
I will echo what everyone else said, and add:
Pray for his family. They are hurt, embarrassed, and they 're not talking about it because it’s too painful to discuss, and they wouldn’t know what to say anyway.
Many people trash the deceased falsely thinking it will make the survivors feel better, you’d be amazed. I can see why they are communicating much.
No matter what his troubles, his family loved him as you did.
Pray for everyone the repose of his soul, and I’ll add mine in.
God bless you.

For your friend and his family:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help, or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.

Praying for your friend and all those hurt by his death…

I pray precious Lord for this soul who has taken his life through suicide and ask for you mercy and comfort for those family and friends mourning his loss. Amen.

Please accept my condolences. While suicide is a mortal sin, there is a chance that he is not culpable due to mental afflictions which could have been caused by his drug use, so continue to pray for the repose of his soul. Requiescat in pace.

I am a recovering self-harmer, and I have a family member that committed suicide, and I have recurrent suicidal thoughts to this day (though not as common as they were). Suicide is a mortal sin, this is true. But for him to be culpable, he’d have to have full consent and full knowledge of what he was doing and the consequences. His culpability may be lessened because of his mental health. I think praying for his soul is appropriate. May he rest in peace.
