One can be properly disposed and still not have a “happy-happy-joy-joy” experience. Our faith cannot be based on our feelings or our moods else it is not a grounded faith. Should we only receive Communion when our feelings are in the “right” place? What about other aspects of the faith, like Confession? One can be sorrowful for their sins and experience true contrition without sobbing through their Act of Contrition. What about marriage - do couples only stay together when they “feel” like it. Actually, with this example oftentimes they do which is why there are so many divorces. You must be properly disposed before receiving communion. This doesn’t always mean just free from mortal sins. If one just had a dispute with his spouse or received a traffic ticket, for examples, it might be better to receive at another Mass but that’s up to the individual. Receiving should be a joyous and meaningful occasion.
Joyous-yes, meaningful-yes, but these words mean something deeper than mere feelings.
Happiness is an emotion whereas joy is more the state of one’s being. One can be suffering and sad and still be joyful. How else could we fully participate in the Church’s Good Friday service and still receive Communion?
2 Corinthians 8:2 — That in much experience of tribulation, they have had abundance of joy; and their very deep poverty hath abounded unto the riches of their simplicity.
