Okay, what this is not: a question about What do Jews beileve. I know extremely well what they beileve, having had very orthodox friends. I also know alot about the sadducee-ical
Jews of history.
This question is not about what generally happens to those who go ex-cathedra when they die. we all know this too.
Nor am i looking for a general, or laymans apologetic for Christianity/catholcism.
Here is the situation. God has blessed my friend with a very inquisitive mind, and a very brilliant mind. My friend is leaving Christianity, and catholocism for Judiasm.
He is completely aware of the âlist of 300 propheciesâ so please, lets not use them as the thing to show him to convince him. His argument goes like this- picking 2 common referenceâs
Isa 7:14
Isa 53
He would say to me âIsaiah 7: I contend and even some secular folk do that Almah doesnt mean virgin necessarily. However, even if God is promising a virgin birth, Contextually God is promising a sign to Ahaz (read the ENTIRE chapter of Isa 7 therefore on context alone it fails as being messianic. Even still, The almighty created Adam and Eve in un-natural ways (by the normal usage of ânaturalâ) and certainly you and I aggree that Adam was not God almighty. Therefore i would further contend that God is capable of causing a virgin birth, without said child being anymore divine than adam, or you, or me.â
ON Isa 53 he would say something like "AH, Isaiah 53 I well agree that this chapter can be rather confusing, perhaps more so than others. However if you read the entire chapter, youll notice a few things contextually⌠This servant is identified as having children, and by the normal usage of the Hebrew i believe it would mean physical children. Jesus, had no children(physically). This passage also says this servant would be sick, and would see his days prolonged, yet as we know- Jesus`s days were not prolonged, and at-least by Gospel records, Jesus wasnât ever sick. Furthermore, if you look at the rest of Isaiah, God continually refers to the nation of Israel as âmy servant, my firstbornâ and a look at history proves that many folk- seemingly Christians mostly considered Jews as âStricken by God, afflicted. despised, rejected, etcâ.
being a layman, I know a few things⌠1) he knows more Hebrew than I do. 2) He can easily counter the normal âlaymanâ apologetics (like the list of 300 prophecies). 3) while he respects the Rabbis, He doesnât follow them hook-line-and sinker, but views them as having a potentially valid interpretation, but he relies mostly on the written alone.
SO, how do we give a scholar of sorts, a scholarly defense of Christianity as opposed to Judaism?
