Different people have different ideas about intimacy. Intimacy does not just mean the physical. As I assume from your orginal post and time that you spend with your faith that you are being chaste then there are many emotional and mental milestones of intimacy that you will encounter in your relationship on the way to marriage. Mass may be one of them. It may be that she simply is not comfortable doing this until someone has a “fiance” title - and don’t laugh because for some depending on what culture they grow up in those titles are important for those boundaries and where they are seen together. Trust me I grew up around the Boston area in a half WASP family - the other half was a blue- collar immigrant Catholic family. I learned all about rules, titles, and boundaries. This may be a subject that you should sit down and talk to your gf about. Boundaries are a VERY important part of a relationship.

BTW- if you are not remaining chaste throw out everything I just said - it is probably straight up Catholic guilt - old school style and you both need to go to confession and knock it off.

You didn’t do anything wrong. Others have listed the reasons she might not want to attend Mass with you, so just accept that for what it is and let it be.

Another thought – at 17, she knows that she will be grown-up and on her own soon (maybe going away to college?), and maybe she wants to keep Mass-time as family-time for now, while they are all still together. In any case, this isn’t about you. God bless.

17 is a little young to be thinking about marriage. College is 4 years and any grad school is another 1-4 years. I went to a very conservative Catholic high school where large families were encouraged but they never encouraged marriage and even serious relationships before college graduation. Some teachers even thought exclusive dating was somewhat silly in high school because of how college is a new set up with a whole different crowd and social scene. High School is a little young for a serious relationship. I see a lot of impulsive decision making by high schoolers that are in love and it hurts them badly when the relationship fails in college. High school and college are supposed to be fun times.

You girl is trying to tell you to calm down and have fun. She probably likes you but wants to enjoy life before being put in a permanent marriage where she will have children pretty quick. 17 is very young and can be scary to think about losing your freedom and having kids to care for.

Uh, did anyone look at the original date of this post?

This was posted in 2008 and the guy that wrote it was 17…Anyone think they are still going out? 🙂
