My heart is rejecting the Blessed Mother

Jess, I personally don’t think that we “have to go through Mary”. For some people, I think that’s a bad way of stating a theological concept that is implied in Scripture. We do go through Mary, whether we realize it or not, but we do not have to take our eyes off of Christ.

Here, maybe this will help. Mary IS human. She is NOT divine. She is just a different kind of person than what we are used to seeing. She is a sinless person. She is who we were meant to be before the fall. And, she also represents the Church, and what we will become.

When you see her that way, then you see that she is our example of the marriage supper Jesus talks about in the gospels. It is isn’t that God needs a co-ruler. If you are seeing it that way, you are seeing a false divinized version of Mary. She is a human being who is sinless, who is a missionary, who is an advocate, and who is right now perfected. The saints are also perfected, but she was the First, and she also represents more of what is to come after this world passes away.

I actually love her role as Spouse of the Holy Spirit. She is Mother of the Son, Daughter of the Father, and Spouse of the Holy Spirit. In being His Spouse, she acts to bring the Holy Spirit to us. This is why grace comes through her, and appartions of her that cause many to convert are seen.

But in all of these things, she is just an example of what we are to be.

When you are a child, you look up at your mother, and though you are immature and undeveloped, you know someday you will be like her. She is not like us, but she is what we are to become.

that is true, I think that “going through Mary” is not like we’re going through her instead of through Jesus… they are not in competition at all… rather, it’s like we’re going WITH Mary, to Jesus, she helps lead us to Him, and all the while we are focused on Him. Even when we are thinking about Mary, all the glory goes to her Son.

Very beautiful post—I hadn’t thought of her trifold role to the Trinity.
I’ve been reading the diaries of St. Faustina the last few hours and they have really touched me. I think I just need to read and listen to Mary’s real words and revelations instead of focusing on theological concepts—I just don’t think I’m ready for that yet.
I will look into Scott Hahn’s book on her—I always enjoy his humor and simplicity.

About Mary’s humility, that is so true…

I had this idea once that maybe the reason there’s not much about her in the Bible is because her glory was hidden on earth and only revealed in Heaven, because those who humble themselves are exalted. She is the Mother of God but she humbled herself and lead a simple life.

St Therese puts it this way:

Virgin full of grace, I know that at Nazareth you lived modestly,without requesting anything more. Neither ecstasies, nor miracles, nor other extra ordinary deeds enhanced your life, O Queen of the elect. The number of the lowly, “the little ones,” is very great on earth. They can raise their eyes to your without any fear. You are the incomparable Mother who walks with them along the common way to guide them to heaven. Beloved Mother, in this harsh exile, I want to live always with youand follow you every day. I am enraptured by the contemplation of you and I discover the depths of the love of your heart. All my fears vanish under your motherly gaze, which teaches me to weep and to rejoice! Amen.

Many years ago I had a pickup truck with those little “wing windows” on each side.

My truck didn’t have air conditioning, and summer after summer I would sweat my way down the highway. I opened all the windows, including the “wings”, but it didn’t really help.

One day my mom went for a ride with me, looked at the “wing windows” and said, “You know, you can open them a LOT wider than that and get a LOT cooler!” See, she’d grown up with cars like that. So she pushed them ALLLLLL the way open - which I’d never realized I wasn’t doing - and voila! for the first time in years I got a nice cool breeze!

My mother didn’t give me anything I didn’t already have - she just showed me a better way to use it so I’d get more from it. Which is what any good mother does - including Mary.

I actually just need to go to Confession and receive the Eucharist now, and I’m in still scheduling things with my priest and getting prepared, reading… I’m meeting up with my priest this Saturday. =) …I can’t wait to finally be officially in the Church. For many months now I’ve been a Catholic “in my heart”. It would be great to finally be able to take Communion at Mass.

(btw, the reason I don’t need to be baptized/confirmed is cause I already was in the Orthodox church).

Over time the church began to realise the great place and importance this woman had in the church. And has been singing her praises ever since. A woman has been exalted above all the angels. This is possibly what led to Lucifers rebellion. God revealed that a lowly human and woman would be placed above him.

John Russell Jr, you have hit upon something very important concerning devotion to Our Lady! To the best of my imperfect understanding, Lucifer, having already rebelled, opposed the decree of Mary, Mother of the Incarnate Word, as superior to himself with horrible blasphemies.

And if, through thy pride, death enters into the world (Wis. 2, 24), life and salvation of mortals shall enter through the humility of this Woman. Those that are of the nature and likeness of that Man and Woman, shall enjoy the gifts and the crowns, which thou and they followers have lost.” To all this the dragon, filled with indignation against whatever he understood of the divine will and decrees, answered only with pride and by threatening destruction to the whole human race. The good angels saw the just indignation of the Most High against Lucifer and his apostates and they combated them with the arms of the understanding, reason and truth.

1. The Almighty at this conjuncture worked another wonderful mystery. Having given to all the angels a sufficiently clear intelligence of the great mystery of the hypostatic Union, He showed them the image of the most holy Virgin by means of an imaginary vision (I speak here according to our way of understanding such things). They were shown the perfection of the human nature in the revelation of an image representing a most perfect Woman, in whom the almighty arm of the Most High would work more wonderfully than in all the rest of the creatures. For therein He was to deposit the graces and gifts of his right hand in a higher and more eminent manner. This sign or vision of the Queen of heaven and of the Mother of the incarnate Word was made known and manifest to all the angels, good and bad. The good ones at the sign of it broke forth in admiration and in canticles of praise and from that time on began to defend the honor of the God incarnate and of his holy Mother, being armed with ardent zeal and with the invincible shield of that vision. The dragon and his allies on the contrary conceived implacable hatred and fury against Christ and his most holy Mother. Then happened all that which is described in the twelfth chapter of the Apocalypse, which I will explain, as far as it has been given me, in the following chapter.
