I have been going to mass, sometimes by myself sometimes with a longtime friend of mine who is Catholic, but I can never discuss this with my husband and when I do go and he knows that I have been there at the mass, he makes terribly rude comments and says that the Catholic Church brainwashes people . He goes to a nondenominational church and I have been there a few times everyone is very nice, however I still feel strongly about converting and taking the classes so that I may eventually be confirmed. Please pray for me and pray for my husband that his heart will open up and he will come to understand my perspective. I do not want to go against my husband and I love him very much, I just feel that this is what is right, and I wish he could understand that.

Peace be with you!!! I lift up my heart to the Lord for you and your husband.

I think most of us were going through this-family,friends,collegues and even born Catholic people…I will pray for you!!!
Hugs

Hi Emslily, I sympathize with your situation. I suggest you pray and pray for your husband.

Have you tried the Rosary? Catholic often offer prayers to Jesus through Mary because we believe Mary is the greatest advocate of all, the greatest saint in Heaven. It’s a common belief that Jesus never refuses His mother’s requests so ask her to pray to Jesus on your behalf.

How to Pray the Rosary

God bless you!

Oh dear. Will he at least agree that there is some common ground among Christians in general?
Is it partly that he doesn’t like this particular friend of yours?
Is he nice and respectful to you in other areas of your life?
Also, I wonder if you have read “Rome Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn? He had similar difficulties with his wife…

There are different. Non denomination churches. Depending on the emphasis .determin the religious view.
The catholic church does offer a nice ceremony in the mass .that is designed. to bring confort.

I think you need your husband to respect you and need to call him on his rude remarks. There are different ways to do this, and they’re all tiring. But, the best is humor. “Yup. Our brains are very clean by the end of it all. Feel my brain.”

Another tactic is to use reasoning, “Why do you think we’re brainwashed? How could that be true when you hear of Catholics who leave the Church? It’s not a cult.”

Another tactic is to say, “tell me more.” Keep asking him questions until he can’t think of an answer. Wear him down.

Another tactic is to say nothing, but I would never take this one myself.

Another tactic is to say, “When you talk like that, I feel you don’t respect me.”

And you could use the broken record technique. “Stop saying that stuff.” Keep on correcting him in short sentences.

This kind of suppression and secretiveness is not good for a marriage. You should feel like you can be your real self with your spouse, and so should he. It might be wise to have some real, heartfelt conversations, where honesty and charity prevail. I would recommend laying down some mutually agreed upon ground rules before the discussion starts. It might even be wise to seek out some counseling.

The journey of faith should be freely entered. You have the God given right to discern your beliefs. God bless your journey and your marriage.

Hello,

My husband is not religious at all and gets a bit like this as well. I would mostly ignore it and keep going to Mass and praying for him. Maybe, he will go with you to a service, eventually! It is difficult and you may also have to watch that you don’t get attracted to Catholic men - another problem.
Regards,
Lisa
