My husband's infidelity gave him herpes - now what?

Condoms are not permitted for medical reasons outside of the zika outbreak.

Who is we?

I suggest the OP writes her Bishop.

Contraceptives, used without intentions to contracept, but avoid a serious and permanent virus seems very much in line with Catholic Teaching.

My statement “In fact, it is against Church Teaching!” Was referring to getting a lawyer and filing divorce!

I would suggest that you document yourself about the Church’s teaching before saying some vague thoughts that are no more than your feelings. (“seems”).

Likewise. I provided a supportive article. I’m suggesting the OP confides in her Bishop. There is reason to believe the use of condoms in her situation are morally acceptable. And no one is telling her to assume from internet opinions.

Write the Bishop. He has a duty and privilege to answer her!

When one uses ABC for medical issues the principle of double effect comes into play. Eo the treatment of an underlying condition is the primary usage not the birth control. Using a condom because your spouse has an sti because of infidelity is not treating any issue at all. Couples who have sti’s before marriage are not permitted to contracept either. This is basic Catholic morality. But if you wish you can search birth control and sexually transmitted diseases on here or write the national Catholic bioethics center. The one exception to this moral theology is the permission to use condoms given by the pope in Zika infected areas (though why that is, is beyond me.)

You could be right. I do see a distinction you are making. However, the ncbcenter article I shared did not explain things that way.

I think the OP has a very good question to ask her Bishop. Let him address it formally. That’s what I would do.

The Zika exception is not part of Church teaching. Pope Francis made an off the cuff statement on a plane, he was not changing Catholic doctrine.

I agree about that.

But I also believe contraceptives, used medically, does not change Church Teaching either.

The Zika thing is a bit different than the OP’s situation. The OP is talking about marital sex.

If I’m menopausal and can no longer have children is it still considered trying to prevent pregnancy?

Well, the formal, and concise Teaching is that “each marital act must be ordered towards procreation”

So it’s possible that condoms remove yourself from this order, even in your situation. Even in menopause.

But its also possible that condoms, used to protect from infection and not intended to contracept (which your situation and state of menopause supports), may be used morally.

But I think your Bishop is the best source to confirm. Have you talked with your pastor? Maybe he can inquire for you?

You want to ask the Bishop if using a condom without intention to contracept, but to prevent your infection, is morally innocent.

The virus is the reason to contracept, NOT preventing conception.

I didn’t want to bring a controversy, so I didn’t dig more, yet,

I agree with others (IdaCatholic and the Little Lady) that gave you the “catholic” answers.

It is easy to find here many posts with post menauposal couples or pregnant women who ask if their state of fertility exempt them from morality rules over sexuality.
The virus is the reason to contracept, NOT preventing conception.
If it were who the Church see the things, you would not have had mondial polemic over the prevention of AIDS. (did you remember in 2007 for eg?).
The Catholic answer is more to abstain if it is the only way to prevent the spread of a disease.
express their own opinion.

For the nbc opinion, I don’t know what you have read on it, but it is only an american catholic group of biothetical eflexion. Their conclusions are valuable but do not apply to the entire world as Church teaching.

I think you may benefit to think more about what your options are and what you really want to do in your hard situation. After seeing your doctor.

it is not a decision that others can make for you.
