Some of you CAF members helped me figure out how to handle letting relatives know about my pregnancy (my fifth child). I wasn’t sure I wanted to tell anyone right now, because I get tired of the anti-child attitudes I hear, and even heard from some relatives.
Well, after realizing that I was showing WAY too much to hide the pregnancy when my in-laws came for a cross-country visit, we hatched a fun plan, partly formed by what y’all here suggested. We didn’t say a word when they arrived, but we did put the baby ultrasound pics on the fridge before their visit. Then, we let them observe the signs, and waited to see how long it took for them to put two and two together. Well, within the hour, my mother-in-law asked me in a funny voice if I had any news I wanted to share. I said something like “how do you mean?” Of course, she asked “are you expecting again”. I laughed out loud and said yes, and then she got excited and yelled at grandpa (my step-FIL) “did you hear that? She is expecting (my last name) baby#5!!” They both were so happy and excited for us, and I felt foolish for having worried. I think they must have long since given up on us following their plan for our lives and decided to just enjoy the ride (and all the grand babies).
We swore them to secrecy until after the first trimester, when we will make a more general family announcement. I am sure at some point we will get some flack, but having my in-laws in our corner, and in on our secret, really helps.
Anyway, that is my update. Thanks again to everyone who chimed in on my last thread about not wanting to deal with telling relatives about my pregnancy. Things are progressing really well with this pregnancy, and now I am actually getting excited about telling everyone. Oh, and one more thing. Even at my OB, one of the places where Catholic women often get flack for having more than a couple kids, I have had nothing but awesome support and happy talk. And the OB herself is very happy to be working with me since my pregnancy and childbirth experiences have been so normal and healthy, so she doesn’t have any reason to worry. Yay! It feels so great to be surrounded by positive attitudes.

How times change. I come from a family of five. In the 1960s, we were considered an average size family. You had to hit 7 children to be considered large.:). Congratulations.

Congratulations & God bless you & your family. Praying to Our Lady of Quadalupe for you & your baby.

My Mother-in-Law got very upset when we told her we were expecting baby no. 7. And she said. "Don’t you think you have enough?!!! I softly responded. “Well evidently God doesn’t think so.” She apologized immediatly and many times after that. God Bless. Memaw

Thank you for sharing! I like how you posted the ultra sound picture on the fridge and waited for your in-laws to notice during their visit! And I’m so glad for you that your MIL’s and doctor’s response has been positive!
