Apparently, my cable company did some sort of upgrade thingy, and now, whenever you scroll through the guide, the porn channels all pop up. It never happened before, so I called up the cable company to find some way to get them off my guide–I have kids, you know. The titles of these movies are pretty foul, and I hate that my kids would be exposed to them while I’m just trying to find the news channel.

The lady on the other end of the phone went through and blocked those channels for me, which is great. She added, “we have to change you from the default to where you have the preference that those channels are blocked.” I asked, “shouldn’t the default be that if you want the porn, you have to actually actively ask for it, rather than it be right there? Rather than those who don’t want it have to do some extra leg work?” She said “nope, the default is to show everything.”

The default is to show everything…that’s part of what’s wrong with society.

I know what you mean. My dad, who is probably one of the biggest golf fans on the planet, only wanted his golf channel. He used to have it and watched it for hours on end (sorta like watching paint dry to me, but whatever  ). Then one day his golf channel disappeared. Noting else was gone, just his golf channel. So he called the cable company and was told that the golf channel was now part of a different package, and if he wanted the golf he had to also get all the porn channels too!!!

He was beyond furious. Why in the world do they do this? It is just manipulation, and opening the world up to more and more filth.

I long for the day when you can custom build your package and choose ONLY what you want to see, and don’t have to pay for everyone else’s smut.

Glad you got your cable figured out - my poor dad refuses to pay for the garbage, so he doesn’t have his beloved golf channel any more. 😦

There’s no money in that. The cable companies build packages so you can’t get just what you want. From a business standpoint, you don’t want to just satisfy your customers, you want them wishing for more.

You have to get the Super Ultra Golden Platinum eye-bleedin’ Package to get the 5 channels you want and the 5000 you don’t want.

I set up a “modified” default menu on our satellite. My kids never question why satellite TV only has about 25 channels.

I’ve noticed that this seems to be the default for several different providers now. I helped my brother reset his channel guide preferences a while back, then had to do it for my dad. Shortly after that he changed providers and I had to do it again. Something happened a few weeks ago and all the porn channels were back, so I had to do it a third time. 🤷

I don’t mean to get off on a rant here, but I think one of the things that annoys me the most is that why do we–who do not WANT that kind of filth–have to do the extra leg work to get rid of it: while those–who for whatever reason WANT porn–have it right there and DON’T have to work for it? When you want something, shouldn’t you have to be the one to go search for it, especially when it comes to something like that? It wasn’t so long ago, that if you wanted “adult entertainment” you had to put up the collar on your coat to hide your face, put on a hat, and leave your house in the dead of night to get it. Now, it’s all out in the light of day. Now, it’s right there whether you want it or not. And if you want to live a decent life, raise your kids without exposing them to that kind of garbage–well, YOU have to do the work for it. You see what I mean? The default is that they show everything now, rather than the default is that shameful things would remain hidden from the innocent. ARRGH! :banghead:
