I just have to say how much I love Schnauzers! I have had 4 in my life, and 3 of them actually have protected me from real danger. (Awesome dogs, but you really have to be a seasoned dog owner.) My next dog will be a Giant Schnauzer.

Yesterday late morning, I was upstairs in my office printing off some documents. My schnauzer starting barking so I came down to see what was up. My two dogs were pacing in front of the kitchen window. I opened the blinds and saw a young man in my neighbor’s back yard, looking at her windows (he was definately not dressed like a service person). I knew he was casing my neighbor’s house to break in. I watched him for a couple minutes, then looked out the front door. I saw a car with 3 other young men, backed into the driveway. Yep, definately looking to rob the place. I got the license plates as they sped off.

I called the police and my neighbor who is out of town. The police ran the plates and came by to say “Thank you. That is how we catch these guys. I ran the plates and we will be watching for them.”

Good job, little schnauzer!! (By the way, she this is the 3rd time she alerted me to a break in next door. She also was a big part in stopping a break in at my house one night many years ago. She’s a fierce little guard dog- all 20lbs of her. I also have a Pit Bull, but he’s more the kind that quietly waits in the wings to back her up and she is the siren. They are a good team:) She lets me know if someone is close to our home- every time- not by crazy yapping but by a nice woof-woof-woof to get me to come see. Just awesome.

Thank God for our four legged friends!!!👍

Good for you, and your little dog too!
Many years ago my family had a large mixed breed dog who began barking in the early hours one Sunday morning. My parents got up and looked outside, but didn’t see anything. Later that morning, as we were going out to Mass, we noticed that there was a screw driver outside our back door, as if someone had been trying to break in. And later we learned that a house down the block had been robbed that morning. The people who lived there had no dog, but got one soon afterwards.
Our Rex had saved us. (No burglar would want to tangle with Rex–his father was a Doberman.)

Wonderful dog - but good grief! Where do you live?!

Four potential neighborhood break-ins since you’ve lived there? I think I’d move…

Actually, I live in a nice middle class neighborhood in the suburbs. I hate to say this, but the problems started when the city demolished some Section 8 Public housing to build luxury high rises near the city. I know not all people in that situation are criminals, but unfortunately a lot of them are.

For reasons I don’t understand, they didn’t just give the tenants notice, the city felt responsible for “placing” them somewhere else. (Hello-- where is the responsibility for one’s self?) They chose my area to do so, and voila. We started seeing problems. I have close family in law enforcement- so they had spent a lot of time in the demolished neighborhood and claim about 80% criminal activity from those tenants who are now my neighbors, just miles away.

Greedy city officials…ofcourse my neighborhood value is declining as crime increases so as much as I would like to sell-- we can’t.

My mom and uncle have schnauzer’s. They are VERY VERY smart dogs. I think he deserves a big meaty bone!!! lol

Schnauzers are very intellingent dogs, and I do love their personalities! A dear friend of our has always had them! I am a big animal lover. Have always had dogs! That is great how your dog brought your attention to the goings on at your neighbor’s house! My son has a pit bull…I babysit her alot when he works out of town! She is such a sweet dog… and one that just wants to be on your lap all the time! lol! 🙂

Yes, they are very intelligent. That is why I say if you want to own one-- you better be up on your doggie behavior b/c they are crafty little devils!

My pit bull is THE biggest snuggly baby ever. I rescued him and my friends rescued 2 and the trait similarities are amazing. They are very people oriented and are lap dogs. Funny, isn’t it? I call him my Piti-Bull!

🙂 Oh yeah, they are crafty!* lol!!!* Several years ago…our friend’s Schnauzer was with my husband, and Chuck…our friend, and they were working on the car we had at that time, and I came over to where they were, and Susie was in OUR car…and I went up to get in OUR car…and this little guard dog would not let me!* LOL!!!* It was pretty funny!!* And the thing is, Susie had known us for a long time!* And pit bulls…truly wonderful dogs!* I just hate to see how people have taken such a wonderful dog and given them such a bad name, and have engaged in such awful things with them.* Betsey is such a love…like yours…she love to cuddle in my lap, and when we keep her, she sleeps right by me, with her head right there on the pillow!* lol!* My husband and I are both very attached to her, and tell our son that its fine with us if he works out of town very often!* ha!*

I’m kinda worried about where you live, too. :o Be careful out there.

But what a GREAT doggy story! I’ve often heard that the LITTLE dogs can be the most ferocious. And I believe it! We had TWO Boston Terriers (also about 20 lbs., each) a few years back. And I found out why they are sometimes called “Boston Terrorists”. :rotfl:

Our little “Jack” would sound the alarm if a chipmunk was on the porch! I can’t imagine how he would have reacted to a burglar!

When my husband was a teenager, their dog (Irish Wolfhound) woke the family as there was someone trying to get into a downstairs window.

We love animals at my house, we have a cat, dog and tortoise. God’s creatures protect and comfort people. I have been suffering with a bad case of scitica since Thanksgiving weekend, and both our dog and cat have been trying to comfort me.

I would never want to let a stranger in the house to do a repair, deliver something etc. but having a dog has always made me feel comfortable when I had to do that. One time two men had come to install a mirror and our new baby was asleep in her room and we had just taken a stray dog in no more than two weeks before.
I sat down to watch them and our dog sat by my side watching every move these men made(I did have him on a lease) and they could tell that he was very protective of me. Otherwise I would have not been able to have that done without someone being there with me.

Thanks for your post about you schnauzer, what a great story! 🙂

Donna, I agree with you about having people come in my house to do repairs or deliver something. Unless its someone I know…I sure dont want to be there alone when they come. I have dogs, so it does make it much better…like you said!
Awww…your husband had an Irish Wolfhound?? Arent they fabulous dogs?? When I was working at the animal hospital, my dear friend there raised them. I was her pet sitter. She and her sister had a pretty big spread of land, and roughly 15 of these amazing dogs! I always felt VERY safe at their house! lol! Now the funny thing though was when I wanted to go to bed there…I usually had at least a couple of them wanting to sleep with me. Sometimes more! lol!!! Good thing my friend’s bed is a king size! Even with that, I had VERY little space, but it was such an experience being with those large dogs! Just loved it!
Dian:)
