This has been an ongoing problem, but yesterday, it reached its peak and right now, I have absolutely no idea how to handle it.

For those of you who did not see my previous posts, I babysit for a family of three children. The oldest is 16, and is not really in need of a babysitter, so we have ended up forming a little sister/big sister relationship over the years. I’m 20, and even though she is a young adult, I still feel responsible for her safety when she is with me, as she is a minor, and her health and wellbeing are important to me.

Rewind to January, she was spending the night at my home, and asked if we could Skype with one of her 18 year old guy friends. I didn’t see any harm in it, so I agreed. I disliked him right from the beginning; he said several off-color, and very sexual things to the both of us, and at the end of the conversation, I expressed my concerns to (let’s call her Beth) Beth. She thought I was a wet blanket (I do have that reputation…I am always concerned with doing what is right, and so I guess I come across as a party pooper a lot of the time).

After writing on here about it, and discussing it with my sister who has a daughter Beth’s age, I was encouraged to confront her parents with it. At this point, Beth expressed to me that she and (we’ll refer to the boy as Adam) Adam were going to begin a relationship, since she had feelings for him, and he recently said that he was infatuated with her. I was alarmed, and ended up deciding that the best choice was to tell her parents so that nothing would go any further.

I told them, they thanked me, but did not seem overtly concerned, which I thought was odd, since they are very devout, traditionalist Catholics who are super conservative and strict in many ways.

It was not long after this that Beth’s parents informed me that Adam was a marvelous boy. “Not EVERYONE has to be as mature as you, Christa,” they said. Her parents starting treating me like I was some paranoid freak, and Beth’s siblings with whom I previously had a close relationship, began to pull away from me and act like I was the enemy and Adam was the good guy. A beautiful relationship that had been formed over eight years was rapidly deteriorating before my eyes.

I then decided that I would shut my mouth and give the boy a second chance. I wanted Beth to feel comfortable confiding things in me, and I knew that acting like a wet blanket would have the opposite effect; if she were to be harmed in any way, I’d be the first to know, and for her safety, I decided to suck it up and try to like him.

Fast forward to yesterday. Beth invited me to Adam’s music concert, because she wanted me to finally meet him in person. I consented, we went, and after the show, Adam asked if we wanted to hang out. He hadn’t rubbed me in the wrong way at this point, so I offered to be the driver (there was no way in hell I was going to let him cart me around). Well, five minutes into the ride, he was saying sexual things to me. He played some sexual song on the radio, and kept asking me if I knew what various terms meant.

We got to the mall, and he started trying to put his hands on me. He hugged me, brushed his knee up against mine, squeezed my arm, and tried to massage my shoulders. I told him several times to keep his hands to himself. Beth thought the whole thing was hilarious. To give you an idea of his “humor,” we passed by a t-shirt that said something about Wednesday being hump day. Well, he got up close to me, his nose brushing against my cheek (ew) and he whispered, “I used to think it really meant humping.”

Finally, he asked to speak to me in private. Beth stepped away, and that’s when Adam confessed to me that he liked Beth a lot, was attracted to her, but had no intention of making her his girlfriend, because she was too “proper” for him. Also, he said she was too young…which she is! Without getting into anymore detail than I already have, it turns out he likes ME…which I truly do not believe. I think something is fishy, though, I have not put my finger on exactly what he is trying to do.

He also said that he and Beth shared a kiss not too long ago. A couple weeks ago, Beth came right out (without me even asking) and said, “don’t worry, we haven’t kissed.” So now, I do not know what to believe. She tells me everything, and now it makes me worry that she is hiding other behaviors from me. It doesn’t matter though, because even if I did try to do something about it, her parents wouldn’t believe me anyway. Remember, I am the bad guy here.

He’s also smoked pot numerous times before, and after he had expressed that to me, Beth yelled at him saying, “you weren’t supposed to tell her that.”

When we got back in the car, he called me babe. Beth even looked surprised, and asked (jokingly) if he was trying to make her jealous. He just laughed it off, and it was quickly forgotten, though, she did say something along the lines of “he likes you better than he likes me.”

I am at my wit’s end. Yesterday was an absolute mess. I feel I handled the situation poorly. Perhaps I let more happen than I should have…maybe I didn’t say the right things. But I was lost and scared about losing Beth’s friendship over something so stupid. I figured that I just needed to make it through the outing and then I’d never have to see him again.

CONTINUED…

Well here I am, still unsure of what to do. Do I tell her parents about this current issue? Do I keep it to myself? Beth is about to get her heart broken, and I am scared about what she might do. She was nearly suicidal over another guy about a year ago. I feel responsible. Am I? But at the same time, I also feel so used by her. One friend suggested to me that she and Adam might have planned this as some sort of prank against me. Do you think that might be a possibility?

Please pray. If you do not have any advice for me, please just keep me in your prayers. I’m very shaken up about this. I hated him physically handling me that way, too. I already have touching issues with guys. That didn’t help the situation, either. It just proved to me even further that that’s what most guys are out for nowadays.

Here’s a quick lesson in boundaries: If someone is touching you in a way you do NOT want, and you verbally express that to them in a loud, clear, and serious tone the next infraction should have been met with putting him out of your vehicle, hesitance or refusal to leave the vehicle is a call to the local police/authorities. If you don’t respect your boundaries nobody else will.

I think that Beth and Adam discussed this before meeting with you and did it to see if they could get a rise out of you.

I actually think that you should not be hanging around with her. You cannot be her friend AND the enforcer for her family. Her parents either don’t want to believe what you say about Adam, or aren’t as concerned as you are.

I think there is too much of an age difference at this point for you and Beth to be friends.

You can’t control what Beth (or anyone else) does, you can only control what you do. I think mentioning any of this to her parents may just get you the same “you’re just overreacting” response as before, which is terribly sad, but again, you can’t control what they do.

If I said anything, it would be to ask Beth how she feels about the way he treated each of you. (Maybe just start with something neutral like, “So, did you have fun when we went to the concert with Adam?”) And then, if she’s willing, let her talk, and just be an attentive listener. Don’t tell her what she should do or how she should feel. Maybe ask a few questions to sort of guide her, but let her come to her own conclusions. And it sounds like this guy’s going to drag her heart along a bumpy road for as long as he can, just because he can. 😦 But I have to say, I agree with Irishmom2–it might not be practical or possible to remain close friends with Beth.

On another note, I think, as Miss_Felicity said, you do need to make your boundaries clearer–it sounds like he thought harassing you was a big joke, and it’s absolutely not. By your actions (or lack of them), he quickly figured out that you’d let him get away with it, so he kept on. I am NOT saying it’s your fault, or that you “deserved” it, because you certainly didn’t! I’m just saying that, no matter how nice you are, you don’t ever have to allow anyone to touch you or speak to you in a way that makes you uncomfortable. In fact, I’d suggest you take a class in self-defense or assertiveness (or both) if at all possible. You don’t have to be mean about it, but you do need to know how to stand up for yourself (and others, too).

Being clear about your boundaries would probably be the best example you could give to Beth, as well–even if it may cost you her friendship (hopefully just temporarily). Right now, she would probably get angry at you and take his side, at least at first, but eventually, she’d learn the truth and understand why it was necessary.

And pray for her, as often as you can. I will pray for her, as well. :gopray2:

You have asked about this family in previous posts and the advice is the same. You need to end this babysitting relationship with them. If this guy was trying to make sexual advances on you then you either need to slap him in the face, call the police but try to met him because of this girl and then end up going places with him or even ride in the car is not using your head. You really need to end this with this family. Tell the parents what happen and be done with it and stop hanging on to some fantasy that you are going to be a big sister to someone that doesn’t want it. You should really know better than this and having a past sexual assault should make you wiser than what you are displaying. You already know that this girl is goofing off with guys on the internet so why are you letting yourself get into these situations?

This sounds at best like a lose / lose situation. Good for you, for sticking to the high road. Time to exit. If you tell Beth, he sounds like the type to deny it. He could suggest that it was you that were interested. This is very ugly, and hard for me to say to you.

Men like this are evil. It would not surprise me if he tried to string both of you along at the same time, and play you off one another. * Your entire story gave me the willies, I know mine has too.

Please ask your guardian angel to watch out for you, then exit. Evil has come a knockin. I know this sounds melodramatic, and to tell you the truth, I hope it ends up being that way, but I wouldn’t count on it. Pray for Beth, pray for her family, and stay away from this monster. He molested you [sort of] while your friend watched, and then bought it as a joke?. What is that? Thats not a joke. This guy could charm the skin off a snake.

Pray and if you don’t get anything definitive from your prayers, please stay away till the storm leaves the village.*

It is time to leave. If the parents don’t take your concerns seriously and the other children are distancing themselves from you then it is time to go.

Give the parents your latest assessment of the situation, collect your pay and exit. Don’t try to argue. You are not responsible for this young lady, the parents are.

As far as the boyfriend is concerned, break all contact and make it plain he is not welcome in your life. He sounds like trouble.

Hi, lovedance4ever

May I ask you why your still baby sitting for these people? The ball is entirely in your court, The resolve to be treated with dignity and respect must be uncompromising.

Now when it comes to this kid ‘Adam’ that you are talking about, if he tocuhes you in an inappropriate manner, go down to the police station and let them know you are being sexually harrassed by this person. They should be able to guide you in the correct course of legal action. He has no right to talk to you like he is and has no right to lay his hands on you in any provocative manner without your consent, because that is sexual harrasment.

Also when it comes to ‘beth’ your ‘little sister’ that you baby sit, you should understand, that friends do not treat other friends how she is treating you. Like I said, the resolve to be treated with dignity and respect must be uncompromising and anything less than that is certainly not a friend. You also say that they consider you a ‘wet blanket’ or ‘party pooper’ and I say that is a good thing, not a bad thing, if the police were friends with the criminals, I would be very upset with the police force.

Personally I feel by your post that you are in way over your head, I would get out of this situation today, don’t go back and don’t baby sit again, if they ask why, just tell em you don’t get paid enough to put up with that **** (Without the **** lol) the kids you baby sit don’t respect you and their parents don’t trust you, it spells disaster, the bridge is out ahead, it’s time to get off the road.

Remember the resolve to be treated with dignity and respect must be uncompromising, don’t compromise on it, if they refuse to treat you with dignity and respect, than you should leave, staying there only tells them that it’s okay to treat you like that.
Matthew 10:16-17:
16 I am sending you like lambs into a pack of wolves. So be as wise as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 Watch out for people who will take you to court and have you beaten in their meeting places.
Matthew 10:14:
14 If someone won’t welcome you or listen to your message, leave their home or town. And shake the dust from your feet at them.
I hope I have helped

Thank you for reading

I think you need to let it go. The vast majority of girls her age in the prime of their lives have an insatiable attraction for bad boys like the one OP is describing. If she is ever going to realize that these kind of boys aren’t the best for wholesome relationships it will probably only be through repeatedly trying them out and getting hurt. It’s like that Taylor Swift song “I know you were trouble…” - she knows he’s “trouble”, and that’s why she’s so giddy for that type of boy. The consequences don’t make themselves apparent in the face of overwhelming attraction for an exciting bad boy that the vast majority of girls go for.

I would not babysit and stay away. You tried to help, and got no where, and put yourself in a bad situation. The 16 year old needs parental guidance, and will not listen to you because you do not have the power of a parent. The parents response is a clue to why she behaves and hooks up with boys like this too. Because the parents see this as not a big deal, neither does she.

If anything happens to this girl when you are babysitting the younger ones-you will get the blame. You can tell them that the guy is a jerk, and that you quit.

I think all the detail you have gone into about these events shows how much you are enjoying the drama. Sorry if that seems harsh, but sadly, the drama can consume a persons thoughts. One way to battle that drama is to think about the early life of the Holy family, where Joseph and Mary kept their heads down and focused on what they needed to do.

So for you, think about how you can work on your own life and steer clear from getting overly involved with others. I realize that we all need our friends and want to be needed, but the energy you’re putting into this drama needs to be refocused into something productive, like school and volunteering.

My dear, I am sorry for your situation. The others have given good advice. I do not want to sound harsh, and I am going to say this as gently as I possibly can. You are not making a good decision by staying in this situation. I understand that you are close to Beth and that you see her as a friend. But she is not behaving the way a friend behaves. Now you are in a situation - even if it was only once - where a man was touching you inappropriately. You mentioned that you have been sexually assaulted before - why are you hanging on to a situation where it might happen again? You need to stay away from both of them.

One poster said the detail of your story indicates you are “enjoying the drama.” Honestly, your post reminds me a great deal of my mother. My mother had many health problems and problems with her in-laws. She would come to me for advice and just to get things off her chest. She would vent and I would listen and give her advice. The next day or so, she would vent again, saying the same things as before in great detail. She did not take my advice, and continued to talk over and over again about the same thing. Years later, to this day, she talks in great detail about the same problems, hasn’t done anything I advised her to do, and is still quite miserable. I eventually made peace with the fact that she “enjoyed the drama.” Somewhere in her subconscious, she wanted to hold on to the issues because she enjoyed talking about it. Nothing I said or did would help or change that. In the meantime, she never cleaned the house, never did the dishes, never did laundry, spent a lot of time in front of the TV, and neglected her health because she was so depressed about her problems.

You have tried to help your friend. That is admirable. She has not accepted your help and by continuing to stay in the situation, you are putting yourself in danger. It’s time to back off. Get out of the drama. You are dealing with abusive parents, stomach ailments, school, and getting a job. You have enough on your plate. You need to focus on school and a job so you can move out of the house and be independent. That is important. Put all the time and energy you are spending on Beth and Adam into school and getting a job. Peace to you.

Is there some reason you did not take the advice with this situation in the previous threads and now are doing the opposite?

The advice is the same, and will be the same for the next crisis.

Lovedance4ever, I think you should seek out friends your own age. You hanging out with a 16 year old and her boyfriend will not produce good fruit.

The amount of outsized drama that seems to find its way into your path is astounding. Perhaps you should reflect on why that might keep happening and focus on steps you can take to change that trajectory.

Well here I am, still unsure of what to do. Do I tell her parents about this current issue? Do I keep it to myself? Beth is about to get her heart broken, and I am scared about what she might do. What do you do? You let it go. You have already expressed your concerns to her parents, and there is nothing more to do. It does sound like the two of them were toying with you, which is wrong and it was inappropriate of him to touch you. But you really need to focus on your own problems, school, and employment situation. You are not this girl’s “big sister” or her parent, and you need to let her make her own mistakes and let her parents be her parents. Let her “relationship” play out however it’s going to, and stay away from unnecessary drama.

Honestly I have to agree with some of the other posters who have suggested that you enjoy the drama. People who don’t want drama avoid it and set boundaries. If this is really causing you anguish, step away from it and do not continue fueling the fire.
