After I proposed to my long time girlfriend after high mass,I offered her something unique and different as she is an artist of sorts.Rather than an engagement ring,I gave her a holy card of St Anthony($1.50AUD)with my written proposal on the reverse side. She was ecstatic and overwhelmed with joy and emotion. She said "this is the best engagement gift ever, better than a ring!"I was thinking -"I just saved $3000,"so she was happy one way and I was happy another way.Subsequently,we married three weeks later, nothing was planned,it just went from moment to moment.
I made my mind up to marry her that very morning before Choir practice.During the three weeks prior,my spiritual director advised that I prepare for marriage by daily mass, additional prayers and spending 1 hour a day in front of the Blessed Sacrament to which I obliged.I had no Buck’s Night as it seems pointless to me.On the eve before our wedding I spent it in contemplation in front of the Blessed Sacrament up until 9pm(Compline).
We had no guest list,so invited the usual suspects;relatives, friends and even parishioners we have never met, altar servers, choir members, neighbours to share the happy occasion. Like I said,it was very moment to moment stuff. In reference to the holy card,I bought it at the piety store after mass that Sunday morning. She proudly tells everyone she meets about the History of that holy card and carries it where ever she goes.
I was so proud of her for being so brave knowing her entire family went to war and have since parted company over her decision to become catholic,so did not attend the wedding. It did not deter her happiness. Her parents saw the photos a few years later after all was settled and rued the missed opportunity and still cry over it today as she is the only daughter. This is my short story I just wanted to share with you guys a piece of my History.
God bless,
JMJ
