Medical marijuana. What a joke. Whenever we hear the wasters on Judge Judy say ‘oh I have a script for medical marijuana for the boo boo on my finger’ you can hear the snort of contempt across the land. What other medicine do people smoke into their lungs for ‘health reasons’. What a huge joke. Just a lame way of living a lie.

Make it legal of make it illegal like normal thinking people would. Why involve an institution like the medical community that we should expect to uphold an ethical standard of practice. “Oh I just have to take my medicine, man and then chow down on the contents of the pantry. Oh it’s for my health, man. The doctors tell me to suck the toxic smoke it into my lungs because they are highly qualified professionals and care about my health, man” pppffffffftttt.
While there are quite a few people who exploit the system to get a doctor to prescribe it there are many legitimate users such as cancer patients. Cancer treatment is painful and kills your appetite, cannabis lessens that pain and gets you your appetite back ergo it is legitimate treatment for that. It’s also good for treating anorexia nervosa

Legitimate medical cannabis users usually take it via edibles or vaping for chronic pain and such, for people who need it occasionally to deal with serious pain vaping is generally the most common way AFAIK.

There is a pill that contains THC called Marinol, but it has a number of side effects that are worse than simply vaping cannabis.

How heartless. I’ve lived with a cancer patient, I know what the nausea, fatigue, and extreme weightloss looks like. I also know how much better marijuana worked than anything the doctors could give, including Zofran. It wasn’t legal in our state, but he had the blessing and even encouragement of his oncologist. You don’t know better than an oncologist at one of the top cancer facilities in the country.

It isn’t for everyone, but it is a lifesaver for some. And I mean literal lifesaver. Noncompliance with chemo is extremely common because of the side effects.

I’ve also journeyed with family cancer patients and witnessed the wonderful learned and skillful oncology doctors and staff make peacefulness of pain at end of life. They do so with legitimate, highly tested and regulated drugs whose primary purpose it pain relief. Thank goodness Australia doesn’t recognise the lie of ‘medical weed’, man.

I’m also highly familiar with the scourge of marijuana addiction and abuse by young people who ‘self medicate’ for their anxiety, depression, inner pain truly believing that this scourge is ‘helping’ them and not just taking over their lives with a lie. Why would the medical community treating my son help him *get off *this wonderous marvel drug if it is so terrific for his medical problems? Why would a mother and father like me and my husband go $20,000 even deeper in debt in a desperate effort to save my suicidal son from marijuana addiction if it is such a ‘life saver’? Shysters and charletons who scheme to use the plight of the truly sick as a portal of entry into the lives of the young innocent who haven’t had a chance to live make me truly and completely sick to the core.

Every other country in the world has cancer sufferers and how many of them unlike the marvelous American medical intellectuals prescribe weed over purpose developed, pain targeted, regulated medications? Very very few, but I can tell you which side are the true medical intellectuals not willing to sacrifice the lives of their young and vulnerable for the toking habits of the strongest and fittest who will not hesitate to scam themselves into the domestic market by using the sick in the community.

Til the day I die, I will shout about ***the lie ***that is the wonderous saintly Marijuana.

Morphine has been isolated from opium and used for pain control for 200 years and had a high rate of dependence.

Marijuana has been used medicinally for over 10,000 years and runs a lower risk of dependence than caffeine usage.

I am sorry for your son’s addiction, but please know that it is the rare exception, not the rule.

Erm…for the same reason I use Xanax for anxiety, and other people misuse it and end up addicted and in treatment. It’s exactly the same story with addictive, opiate painkillers. Furthermore, say what you will, but while you can develop a severe psychological dependence on marijuana, but not a physical addiction.

You have your experience, and I respect that. But you don’t have the right to disparage the experience of others and say that they are exploiting the system for fun. My husband didn’t smoke for fun, he did it to keep his job, eat, and get out of bed.

I repeat, you do not know better than the oncologist.

This post does make alot of sense. Smoke in the lungs is smoke in the lungs. I’m sure the benefits for depression and pain relief are real, but there are medicines that can do this without also affecting lung tissues. In teh realm of cancer, there are also homeopathic treatments (drastic dietary changes, supplements, etc…) that people swear by and claim to have extended their life expectency…all without drugs.

Anyway, I’m less interested in the whole “medical marijuana” topic than I am in the fact that LongingSoul and I might actually agree on a topic (as opposed to our last discussion) ! 😃 I tip my hat and leave the debate for others to argue. :tiphat:

Unfortunately, you have bought into a great lie to make what is illegal for a very good reason, legal. I believe it comes from the blindness of a society who culturally puts individual rights far above the common good of all. It’s survival of the fittest and the antithesis of a truly Catholic/Christian/theistic raison d’être.

I think this is the enigma that I am. In one debate I’m called a raving righty puritanical conservative… in the next I’m the lefty liberal modernist socialist. 🤷

I guess that’s the difference between us. I’m more concerned about medical science and the suffering of patients. You’re more concerned about ensuring that cancer patients live in a Catholic society.

I didn’t buy into a lie. I worked with a team of medical professionals to see my 20-something husband through cancer. After a lot of trial and error, pot worked. He stopped losing weight, and his blood counts went up because he was eating.

Once again, you do not have the right to tell me that my experience is not the case anymore than I have a right to tell you that pot has not in fact caused serious problems for your son.

Oh, and it isn’t antithetical. The Catechism states that it can be used for medical purposes if it doesn’t violate civil law.😉

I find it interesting that first the objection was smoke, when that was addressed it became “addiction”, and when that was addressed, it devolved into marijuana being an anti Catholic “lie”. I’m sensing an agenda here, and a desperate attempt to maintain it.

For what its worth, my husband did smoke it because vaps are expensive and edibles are hard. But his doctors told us that he was only going to be in treatment for 6 months, and that the smoke damage would heal over time. They were more concerned with getting him through treatment and keeping him employed. He works for a small public accounting firm with under 50 employees. They didn’t have to keep him on. But he was able to work from home with pot. Not the case with Zofran. (Zofran is considered the best for chemo, and it is crazy expensive even with insurance. It didn’t work for him.)

Once again, it isn’t for everyone. But every cancer is treated differently and every person responds differently. Some have good luck with prochlorepozine and never even need Zofran. Some people discontinue treatment because nothing, legal or otherwise, helps enough to make the odds of survival worth the hellish treatment.

Marijuana has been misused recreationally for 70 years, that is the problem. It has become infamous as a cure for motivation, and that is the word from people who’ve used it. Users are wise to obtain outside feedback about their use from people close to them, even when legal. (The same is true of any psychoactive drug, though.)

I use marijuana to control my severe psychotic seizures. It is nothing short of a miracle. Yes I am on psychotropic drugs as well, very minor doses, but nothing major, thank God. When I got out of the psychiatric hospital the third time, I knew something had to give so I started using medical marijuana. The relief was immense. No more heavy psychotropic drugs that made me sleep all day and kept me from being a useful member of society. Now I contribute to my community as wife, mother, grandmother, and church musician.
Unfortunately it is against the law in my state, but my doctor has recommended that I continue the usage.
I think God put this plant here for a good reason.

I think you’re right. There are times when violating a law in order to relieve serious suffering or restore productivity in a way that cannot be done in a legal way is morally justifiable.

I’m sorry that you suffer such a horrible condition but anecdotal miracle stories that demonstrate that marijuana stops seizures, *stops *psychotic episodes, *helps *insomnia, cures depression and anxiety… when the overwhelming data is that they cause these effects in many people, does not serve as sound medical advice.

Randomized controlled clinical trials are required for all new FDA- approved medications and there are strict ethical guidelines in weighing good verse harm. Medical doctors have no business in prescribing marijuana to their patients under the guise of medicine.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved smoked cannabis for any condition or disease as it deems evidence is lacking concerning safety and efficacy of cannabis for medical use. The FDA issued an 2006 advisory against smoked medical cannabis stating; “marijuana has a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and has a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision.” The National Institute on Drug Abuse NIDA states that “Marijuana itself is an unlikely medication candidate for several reasons: (1) it is an unpurified plant containing numerous chemicals with unknown health effects; (2) it is typically consumed by smoking further contributing to potential adverse effects; and (3) its cognitive impairing effects may limit its utility”.

You need to stop. Giving medical advice is against forum rules, and telling someone that their doctor is wrong is dangerous, irresponsible, and presumptuous. Your son has a problem, and I’m very sorry. However, your experience with your son does not qualify you to argue against someone else’s medical treatment. She and her doctor know more about her health than you do, and they know how to treat it.

There is a lot of history and politics at play as to why marijuana is illegal. But the fact that it’s a schedule I drug means that research is nearly impossible. But it was removed from medical use against the recommendations of the AMA. A moral crusade overruled science. And in 2009, they repeated their stance that it should be removed from the schedule to facilitate clinical research and develop new drugs.

  1. Effectively ban research on cannabis
  2. Claim there isn’t enough research to support legalization
  3. ???
  4. Profit

One thing I will never do, is stop. Musician is relating anecdotal information anonymously over the internet and not sound medical information. I’m not telling her to stop smoking marijuana, I am saying that despite a doctor prescribing it… it is not medicine. Now if I were here telling people to stop taking their approved prescription medicine, I’d give myself a rollicking. I am actually here saying that although it is something that some random people deem good for you, it is not ‘medicine’ that meets any of the standards and ethics that medicine require.

Her medical doctor is not a random person. My husband’s oncologist is not a random person. They are highly trained, qualified professionals who want what’s best for their patients.

You, on the other hand, are a random person with an ax to grind because of your personal experiences.

You are not more qualified than doctors, and your opinion does not carry more weight than a pile of clinical research that supports the use of marijuana.

Musician is simply discussing her OWN personal experiences. We all have a right to express that.

And, as BlueEyedLady mentioned, we are NOT allowed to give medical adivce here.

Additionally, LongingSoul, you are being uncharitable. I detect no compassion in your posts.

I willing wear the charge of being uncharitable to marijuana. I have no compassion for marijuana or anybody who promotes it other than as a recreational drug. (I certainly don’t agree with that, but at least it is the honest arm of the agenda) There are some things where one has to cut to the chase. When people argue for embryonic stem cell research and use the medical problems of suffering people to legitimise it, clear speech is called for. Or those arguing for contraception or abortion or gay marriage. All involve suffering of some sort looking for solutions. When a ‘solution’ results in the death of the spirit, it is no solution at all.
