I told my parents that I wanted to convert to Catholicism after years of research. My dad took it well but my Mom is all upset. She says I can go to Mass but she thinks she is a failure as a parent for not sharing her faith and making me go to our baptist church were we had a preacher that was not very good. I tried to tell her that it is where God is leading me to go and it is not her fault but she won’t listen. Can anyone help?

Brockman, that is distressing for you. It’s really hard for parents to process some of the decisions and life choices that their children make. We can all feel that about some of our children’s choices. It’s not as unusual as you might think. It’s very personal when it happens in your own family though.

You’re not responsible for her feelings, she is. We are responsible for our own.

If you remain peaceful and continue to be extra kind and thoughtful in your daily life, in time she will feel some reassurance.
As Baptist she may have many misconceptions about the Church.

I know two parents who feel they failed because they carefully raised their daughter as an atheist, and she became an Anglican Christian.

It is hurtful that your mother is so sad.
I’ll pray for you and your family

Give her some time. It’s a shock when a child coverts to another religion. Don’t keep after her; after all, she said you can go to Mass!!!

First of all, good for you for making your own decision! I also told my parents I was thinking about joining the church. My dad took it well, and my mom was disappointed because she felt she didn’t raise me right either in her church. She did though, and I developed a good relationship with the Lord. However, her church came much after the Catholic church, and she didn’t see her church as a scattered church like the rest of the protestant churches. You see, we are taught with the church we grew up with. It’s all that makes sense to us. But I had to unlearn so I could learn the Catholic faith because I felt it was the true church. Indeed, it was! Later, she wanted me to go to a church where I felt most ministered to, and I’m sure your mom will feel the same way eventually.

If you want, you can share to your mom these scripture videos that I made. It shows the bible is actually very catholic in teachings. It might be good for her if she’s willing to understand why you’re thinking about joining.

There is a a book you might want to get. It is “Catholicism for Dummies”. You can find it on Amazon.com for about $10 and change. You might find a copy on e-Bay. Get a copy and give it to your dad, explaining to him that the title is not intended as an insult to either him or your mom. Ask him to read it and for him to get your mom to read it. It is an excellent explanation of what the Catholic Church is all about and it refutes all of the arguments against it. If your mom actually does read it, it will help your home life.
Your mother should be proud of you, because your decision to become a Catholic, shows that you have grown up and, because of the Holy Spirit, you know your own mind. Don’t worry, stick by your guns, your mom and here relatives will come around. Love is always stronger than religious prejudice.

She may not know it yet, but hopefully she will eventually learn that God heard her prayers. Pray for your mother as she has prayed for you.
