Spiritual Journal # 3: My Near-Death Experience

June 29, 1991

On May 26, 1991, I was on my way to a Big Brothers/Big Sisters meeting to discuss my “Little.” I have always been a person that use’s a seat-belt in a car without fail, but the buckle had broken a few days before, and I was unable to use it. I had ordered the part, and the dealer said it would take about 5 days to get it in.

As I drove to the meeting, in my hometown in Maine, I came to a stoplight which was red. I was the first one at the light, so I waited for it to change; I was going to make a left hand turn onto a four-lane street to go downtown. The light turned green, and I pulled out into the street.

I then looked out of my driver’s side window, and a car had gone through the red light at a high rate of speed and was about 3 feet from my driver’s door as I saw it. The first words that came from me were, “Please help me Jesus,” and then I felt the car crashing into me.

The first time that he hit me, it was with such force that because of my inability to use my broken seat-belt, it threw me over to the front passenger’s seat. The impact pushed my car sideways up the street about 15 feet. It was an older gentleman, he panicked, and instead of putting on the brakes, he stepped on the accelerator and hit me a second time, and then a third.

The total distance of being pushed sideways after being collided into for 3 times, was about 60 feet up the street.

During the continued crashes, I remember saying, “When will this end,” it was screeching tires, the smell of burned rubber, and the crushing of metal. I remained conscious through it all; my head was bleeding from pieces of the windshield glass embedded in my forehead, and face, and my left side hurt very badly.

There was a Police Cruiser on the opposite corner, and the police officer immediately called the ambulance. It seemed like just a minute, and I could hear the sirens coming.

The Paramedics brought me into the ambulance and stripped me down, so that I wouldn’t go into shock. I remember hearing the sirens wail as I was taken to the hospital, and I remember being wheeled in on the gurney, still remaining conscious, as they brought me into the emergency room.

And then all of a sudden, I was no longer “there." I was floating in a tunnel, which was about 15 feet in diameter.

I felt such an overpowering sense of being loved, and of being held, and cradled in a warm, enveloping embrace. I felt a sense of peace that I had never known before, nor can describe. There was a very bright white light at the end of the tunnel, which flooded it. It was brighter than the sun, but I could still look at it.

I was slowly floating toward the end of the tunnel and just as I started to enter the light, I was no longer “there.” I was now in a desolate place, with scrub grass growing here and there. In the distance, about 50 feet away, I saw Jesus crucified on the Cross… I couldn’t make out His Face because of the distance, but He turned His Head to look at me, and as He hung on the Cross, He said,

“I did this for you, and you will be with Me, but not yet, your journey is not finished.”**

At that instant I found myself back in the operating room, I looked up and saw the surgeon with his scalpel, and he said, “I am ready” to the anesthesiologist, and then I was put under.

In the recovery room the doctor came in, and shook his head and said, “You had a ruptured spleen, which had to be removed, a tremendous amount of internal bleeding and loss of blood, a broken pelvis, and a broken shoulder. I don’t know what happened in the operating room or what saved you, but people just don’t live through this, with the extent of injuries and loss of blood that you had.” I was in so much trauma that I could not speak, and tell him what I had been through.

I was in the hospital for a month, having a difficult time of learning how to walk again. The police later said that if I had had my seat-belt on, I would have surely been killed after 3 impacts. The drivers’ seat, and drivers’ side of the car was totally obliterated.

That broken seat-belt buckle was God’s gift to me.

I have since felt like St. Paul when he said that he wished more to be in Heaven than on earth, after having his somewhat similar experience. I truly miss the total amount of love, and peace that I felt there.
