Good Evening,
So my neice is only 2 months older than I and we are both 27, she’s married by the church, has 2 beautiful girls, good job, nice husband etc…i dont want to judge anyone, it’s more of a worry than judgement, but here it goes, she works all the time so she can buy coach purses, always talks about materialistic things on facebook, ie. oh the “armani” store was so packed today" etc…it drives me crazy. I have 2 kids also and an awesome job and I make what her and her husband make combined and i am the total opposite, i bargin shop, have my cars paid off etc. well i posted an article last night about 7 states suing the US govt due to the HHS mandate and all she can comment about is how she will save money on her IUD, :(instead of paying her co pays and deductible for birth control. I cant understand how that’s more important than the bigger picture. During christmas this past yr, she was talking about how she had taken a class and she was reading the Quran or whatever it’s called, for Muslims, I told her why dont you read the bible first from front to back. It just seems like she’s lost, and that makes me sad bc we grew up together and somehow we lost each other in high school, she was the one that was wild etc. and i wasnt. anyway i think i know what to do and that is pray for her and her family. Thanks.

Well it’s honestly her facebook and she can discuss what topics she wishes to. You guys may be family, but people go in different directions and aside from keeping in contact with her there really isnt’ anything you can do to try and make her see it “your way” so to speak. You may be sad and find her way of thinking off and she may think the same about you, but in all honesty I wouldn’t let finances come between your relationship. I have cousins and family members who don’t share my views, but I do my best to establish and keep a relationship with them as best as I can.

I would pray for her, yes, but if you can actually have a conversation with her, do ask her about using the IUD, maybe she had poor catechesis and doesn’t realize that the Church forbids this. She might tell you she is like Nancy Pelosi and believes that the Church is wrong on these things, but then again, you never know. If there is a Bible study at your church you could invite her. Rather a shame when Christians are willing to read the Qur’an but not their own Holy Book…

🤷

Yes, pray for her.

You might also spend more time with her and hope you rub off. There’s a saying that goes around twelve step programs, “If you want what we have, do what we do.” Let her see that you have inner peace, financial security, all the really valuable things. Just don’t get preachy.

Many good people neglect the soul and are incrementally led astray by placing a high value on the material life…I think it’s the way of the world. Some you can talk to if you’re close or related, the others all you can do is pray for.

It’s good she’s reading the Koran. At some point she’ll discover there’s no loving God to be found in that book and have questions that you can capitalize on.

Or perhaps you can reach your niece through her daughters. Get them both a ‘miraculous medal’ and God willing, they’ll be impressed with the possible divine assistance available to them and ask you some follow up questions. I dunno…maybe they are the key to your nieces heart.

For your own peace of mind I think you should stop reading her FB page.

About how she spends money… I’m like you - I’m a saver and bargain shopper. But we’ve got to realize that not everyone has this value system in place, and as long as her kids aren’t in rags and she’s out buying thousand-dollar handbags or she’s not trying to borrow money from your family to support a lavish lifestyle, how she spends money is really between her and her husband.

Isn’t that what Facebook is mostly about?

“I’m eating a muffin on my back porch.”

“I just finished the comics section. Dilbert was hilarious.”

“We can’t decide between a Honda Odyssey or a Toyota Sienna.”

yada, yada, yada…

I gave up on Facebook long ago. Makes you want to blow your brains out!

Well I use my page for political rabble-rousing and posting pro-life information. No muffin reports from me! Whole bunches of otherwise normal Americans have been using FB for political networking and news-sharing for quite a while now. My sons don’t get it at all, but then they are too young to really be involved in politics.
