I recently ran into some Monastery Icons at a local bookstore. It’s honestly upsetting that good, holy Christians are fooled into buying them. I thought, “Wow, Saint Francis!” I looked on the back, and guess what it said…😦
I’ve noticed, their artistic style gives them away, without even looking at the back of the icon.
I feel your pain. :sad_yes: I remember my friend giving me a really nice comic book version of the Bible. I liked it up until it went to talk about “Satan’s plan to lift Mary up as a goddess” and the “evil Church” that he created to help him do so. Needless to say it was talking about us.
Aren’t most of their icons of western saints?
I would say, be immediately suspicious of a Padre Pio icon and check the back before purchasing.
Wow. Is every icon of a Western saint made by them?
Yes. Also see if the background is yellow or gold. If yellow, it’s probably a Monastery icon.
I’d like to thank everyone here. I feel alerted. 😃

would you really purchase this icon from these people ?

bridgebuilding.com/narr/gnch.html
You have to wonder about a site called “bridge building”, yet they seem to be a spin-off of another respectable site and business (but who knows?).

Bottom line = if you want a “real” icon, buy from a “real” monastery store. There are plenty out there, and they could use your support and patronage. They are in business to glorify God.

They used to sell work by Robert Lentz - and some of his work would definitely raise eyebrows

just look at 2 of his on this page

trinitystores.com/store/artist/Robert-Lentz?page=5

Try the first one and then look at Merlin of Britain

Please please please - as it has been said before - buy Icons from proper Monastery Sites or other Church Stores - if in doubt you can always ask for help here .

The Icon Corner of the OP is just beautiful! I have several icons I use as prayer aids that I love very much along with my statues and holy pictures. The icons were gifts or purchased from the Printery House in Conception, MO. BUT- I do have 2 from the Monastery Icon catalog. I have had them blessed but was totally unaware until reading this forum thread of the weirdness associated with the people behind them! What to do? I gave a small one as a gift once but don’t know if the couple has had it blessed. Now I feel sad. Should I tell them? Also, a very devout member of my parish purchased 2 large ones that are hung on either side (not in the sanctuary) of the front wall of the church. I’m sure they’ve been blessed too but I will never look at them the same way after this. Well, ‘caveat emptor’, as they say.

If they’ve been blessed, then don’t worry about it.

As for the ones you gave as gifts- explain the situation, and encourage them to have the icons blessed.

I could not agree more. The only thing I’d add to this, of course, is to not purchase their products again. But yes, suggest to the ones with the gift to have them blessed.

FKC,

What a lovely icon corner! Seeing it makes me want to start one all the more :).

As to the Monastery Icons/Robert Lentz/etc, I can relate. I received several ‘icons’ as gifts (the quotation marks are because they were prayer cards with iconographic designs, not mounted or written icons). Anyway, one was done by Lentz to commemorate a female bishop at a nearby Episcopal Church. I only thought to check to see who it was by after reading one of the threads that was here awhile ago about him, so thanks for the heads up to the posters of that thread :p. The prayer card was purchased at a religious bookstore though this store has items that fit on various parts of the orthodox-heterodox spectrum . The Lentz prayer card I have is currently in the back of a prayer book out of reach on a high shelf.

Again FKC, your icon corner is very nice 👍. No doubt it will be a space amply conducive to prayer.

Did you get your icons blessed? The reason I ask is because of the icon of Our lady of Perpetual Help looks like its made by Monastery Icons and I hear they put all these hindu spells on them and stuff.
Looks beautiful, if you ever need any icons made by a Catholic, you can always check out my husband’s work at etsy.com/your/shops/craftymamacita/sections/11709502.

He is making all the mysteries of the rosary as icons. He should be done with his Annunciation in just a week or so.

The OP’s display is very inspiring. I have a lot of space, in my apartment for a decent amount of icons. My only debate is, who to choose, in addition to Jesus, and the Theotokos. I’ve read some of St. Seraphim’s, Irene the Great Martyr and Virgin (patron saint of the Byzantine church I’ve been going to) Theophan the Recluse, St. John Chrysostom. The only question is $$$ :p.

Crafty Catholic, I’ve signed up for etsy, in an attempt to view your husband’s work, but I’m getting errors pertaining to permissions, or lack thereof.

Here are some suggestions…Saint Anna, Saint John the Wonder Worker (Maximovitch), Saint Herman of Alaska, Saint Innocent of Alaska, Saint Padre Pio, Blessed John Paul II, and Saint (whoever your patron saint is).

Try going to our Meylah store as well. Here is the link to one of our icons: meylah.com/craftymamacita/sweet-kissing-icon-print-on-stretched-canvas-8-x-10-virgin-and-child-jesus

I also opened up a Meylah site specifically for my husband’s artwork, but it looks like Meylah is under maintenance this morning, so I can’t give you the link. Look for a shop called Leonard de Bruyn at Storenvy.

Here is another link to my Etsy shop: etsy.com/shop/craftymamacita

My husband is starting school at Thomas Aquinas College this year and all of the proceeds help to support our family while he goes to school. Any help is really appreciated.

Appreciated thanks for these, BusterMartin

Does anyone know of a legitimate source for icons of Western saints, such as Francis de Sales? Or are such icons even considered proper?

Since most (legitimate) Byzantine icons are made by Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholics I doubt that you will find much icons of western saints. Not only that, the potential buyers are mostly eastern as well and are thus less likely to buy icons of western saints. IF, however, you find one please make sure they aren’t “Monastery” icons.
