My New Roman Missal from Midwest Theological Forum (lots of pics)

I got my new missal from Midwest Theological Forum today. It killed me to spend the money, but I went for the one in black leather. I figure if I use it every Sunday for ten years, it will be only $0.17 per Mass.

It is much thicker than I thought it would be, thick enough where it easily accomodates six ribbons. I thas some heft to it. You are not keeping this thing in your back pocket like a magnificat. But it is spectacular to hold. The pages are true parchment, like a fine Bible, very thin, and I have to be careful as I tend to be rough. I’ve just opened it for the first time and began breaking in the binding and can’t wait to begin exploring it and using it at Mass. It is not a trivial expense so I’ll try to give some more impressions over the next day(s) if I can. Meanwhile, here are some pics.

What interested me was that the description on this states “All the readings for a day are now contained in each entry, not referenced throughout the volume” - this seems very nice to me. Can you tell me if the edition you are referencing here has a similar feature\layout?

Recieved mine last week. Used it Sunday. Love it!!!. Very well made, great layout and easy to move from section to section. Liturgical cycles are placed in order to avoid having to flip back and forth to much.

Ummm… I think so.

This missal has all Sunday readings for years A, B and C as well as all weekday readings for years I and II grouped together in chronological order. For example, Advent is at the front, and the first week of Advent has Sunday year A, then year B, then year C, then Monday year I, Monday year II, Tuesday years I and II, Wednesday years I and II, etc.

Is that what you mean?

The Daily Roman Missal, 3rd Edition,published by MTF is simply a beautiful, well-crafted book. I ordered the leather cover edition some time ago and it arrived this week. It’s a thick book, measuring nearly 2 inches in thickness.

The books contains the complete rubrics, which are about as complicated as the LOTH. I hope MTF publishes a quick lookup guide like they do for the St. Joseph’s missal.

I’m definitely going to have to learn how to use the book. I don’t mind figuring out all the rules though. It’s like a big, fun puzzle for me. I guess I’m a nerd.

At first look, the variable materials for the ferial days are easy to find. I still have to learn the rubrics against the Roman calendar to find the variable parts for the feasts, memorials and optional memorials, plus how to determine the Preface and Eucharistic Prayer for the day. The materials for the solemnities are straightforward; however, for some reason (and I’m probably just being a dolt about it), I couldn’t find the prayers and readings for today’s Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Does anybody know where/how I can find them in the new missal?

$60 is a lot for a missal. $95 for a leatherbound version is even more!

I’m hoping to get the Sunday Missal from the UK-based Catholic Truth Society. Although it has the Jerusalem Bible for the readings (instead of the NAB for America), the Order of Mass is the same…and it has Latin English…and Gregorian chant for chanting the congregation’s part at Mass…and it’s less than $30.
