Same sex marriage (SSM) is splitting Christendom. It is the issue of our time. Of course divorce is in many ways a bigger issue and that is widely accepted.

What is interesting to me, and it could be an interesting conversation with your friend, is that the groups going through this stress unity above the divisive issue of SSM. An interesting thought experiment is to then imagine yourself as a Catholic when the reformation churches began. Are any of their issues with Catholicism bigger than this issue? Put another way, if they were a Catholic today would any of their doubts about Catholicism justify leaving the Catholic Church? To me it seems clear that SSM is far more certainly wrong than whether the pope has particular authority within the church.

to “north-side” Evangelicals,
What’s “north-side” refer to?
Of the Communion Table, a.k.a. the altar. It’s a nickname for low-church Evangelical-style Communion services, and gets its name from the misinterpretation of some rubrics from the Book of Common Prayer. In some case, the misinterpretation of the rubric caused some low-church ministers to perform the services on the “north” side of the communion table, a.k.a. the Gospel side, or, from the point of view of the congregation, to their left.

OK. Thanks for the info. I guess that would look odd.

Fr. Longenecker writes well. Some portions could stand expansion, or other comment, but much of what he says, I’ve been posting to explain Anglicanism, for many years.
