I am thrilled beyond belief! My niece, who is also my Goddaughter, received her First Holy Communion this morning. She has been so excited in the past few weeks at the prospect of finally being able to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus, and she did beautifully this morning! Later in the day, after all the excitement of the Mass and the party, we were talking and she said to me, “Aunt Judy, I am so glad I made my First Holy Communion today. I feel like a new person. When I ate the bread, it felt like it went through my whole body and right to my heart!” Well, do I have to tell you that the tears of joy just rolled! I told her she is indeed a new person, and she said she can hardly wait until tomorrow when she can go to Mass again and receive Jesus again!
My niece is my heart, and right now my heart is filled to overflowing!!

I give your niece a standing ovation for reciving her first holy communion. I give my appause to you both since I have never gotten the oportunity to be confurmed and recive the holy communion when I was a young lad.

Thank you, ImperialPhoenix. My niece has been quite blessed in her short life, and those blessings have overflowed to the rest of the family. She was the catalyst for me returning to the Church at all. When my sister asked me to be her Godmother, I knew I could not accept unless I returned seriously to my faith. (My story is not long, but it is not interesting, either. I had simply turned away for a long, long time.) Katelyn’s birth was the spark that really ignited my desire to come back to the Church. She has always had a strong love of Jesus and the Blessed Mother (with whom she has always had a very special connection-- she says she remembers when the Blessed Mother visited her when she was in the NICU after her birth!). It is that love that has shone through to convince my sister to return to the Church as well, and now my non-Catholic brother-in-law (who has ALWAYS insisted that his girls receive a Catholic upbringing) is considering officially joining the church.
ImperialPhoenix, take it from one who has been there-- it is NEVER too late to come fully into the Church. Even if you did not received the Sacraments as a child, you may certainly do so as an adult.

Congrats! My niece made her First Holy Communion on Saturday as well. I am so proud. Praise be God!

Thanks, Slinky. Believe me, I have given much thanks to the Blessed Mother. As I said in the original post, my niece has had a special connection to the Blessed Mother since birth. She was in the NICU immediately after birth due to a pneumothorax (air bubble in the chest cavity), and she developed jaundice so bad that the doctors were considering a blood transfusion. My mother went to visit her and placed her miraculous medal in Katelyn’s hand while she was praying for her. The next day, her jaundice disappeared almost completely. When Katelyn began to speak in sentences, my sister (her mom) was telling her about a depiction of the Blessed Mother that is hanging in our mother’s house. Katelyn interrupted her and said, “remember that time I was real sick in the hospital? She came to my crib and visited me.” The ONLY time this child has ever been in the hospital was when she was born.
How wonderful is Jesus to share his mother with us!
