I must pray to ask God about my nothingness! I am finishing a book where a woman kept a journal about life’s challenges and suffering. I have to. But I never kept up on it. And I am sure I have had many prayers answered. This is where a journal comes into play. I can go back and read the date I prayed about something.

I want to ask God in this journal why I must suffer through this fruitless NOTHINGNESS!!! I no longer have a career. I haven’t had one in 5 years. That’s hard for a man to take. My marriage is a lonely endeavor. There is no romance or connection. Once again NOTHINGNESS! So why all the NOTHINGNESS?? Am I being disobedient? Am I not trying to fulfill what God has me on this planet for? At least I am raising a child. I just hope I am doing that correctly and not setting a bad example.

It’s so hard not doing something with one’s life. We all know the verse that states “an idol mind is the devil’s workshop…” I know all too well what that means.

I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY MY LIFE IS PASSING ME BY?!! I’m not getting any younger!!

Why? Why? Why?

I’m sorry you’re going through this - sometimes waiting is tougher than anything.

Without a bit of nothingness, we wouldn’t be able to appreciate the fullness to come. Remember that Jesus loves you, but also trusts you enough to handle some suffering, so that others less capable of dealing with it don’t have to.

“Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.”
“I plead with you! Never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged. Be not afraid.”
“If He asks much of you, it is because He knows you can give much.”

Your nothingness.
God can work with that.
It is in fact spiritually profound.

Praying for you from today’s Liturgy of the Hours:

May your Holy Spirit teach us to do your will today,
– and may your Wisdom guide us always.
Lord, you are our life and our salvation.
Amen

I’ve never had a real “career” to speak of. Mostly it’s just been whatever it takes to get the bills paid. I haven’t worked in almost 20 years. Even before that I felt my nothingness. The bible says we are parts of the body of Christ. Well, ever since my teens, I’ve felt like the little toe. And that only because I couldn’t think of anything else lower than that. So, I have an idea of what you are feeling. At least, to a point. I’ve heard that it’s harder on a man than it is on a woman. But it isn’t any easier as time goes by. I’ll be praying for you.

A brief history of your -posts show that you struggle with negativity and yelling. Both of those are in the first post on this thread. Please, pray and seek out some help.

I will also pray for you as well.

Hey Main Brain…I often call myself “nobody…God’s little nobody.” That makes me somebody to our Lord and I am content with that. To suppose that I am more than nothingness is a bit of vanity and lack of humility on my part. I think we are all guilty of wanting to be more of what we desire and not what God wants us to be. I think it is great that you are keeping a journal. I have often thought after reading you post that you could be a writer or create a blog. I will continue to pray for you as I hope you might pray for my intentions, also.

It’s just so hard waking up every morning feeling a heavy heart because I have no purpose other than to be a house husband. I know being a dad is a blessing but I just don’t feel I have accomplished anything else. I am tired of my wife supporting me. I don’t feel like a man.

I am off to Mass. After that, I will help serve the homeless. That’s something good. That’s a good start.

Raising good children is a life you can hang your hat on! (click here)

Is there a TMIY program in your area?

Also, you might find counseling to be helpful - I mean that with all good intentions; however, it just sounds like you are suffering from depression. It’s an insidious condition that is often difficult to self diagnose. Respectfully, please try to find a good Catholic counseling program, the rectory might have a listing, or the Chancery Office, even Catholic Charities.

Do it all for Jesus, rather than for yourself:
“Jesus, I am off to Mass now for you; Jesus, I an going to help the homeless now for you and it will be my best help because it is for you. Jesus, I am going to take care of this task in the house now, for you, and it will be something to see because it is for you. Jesus, I will love my wife today for you, and she will be loved like no woman has been loved, because of my love for you”
Don’t do your “nothingness” for yourself, never “accomplish” for yourself, do your nothingness with great delight for Jesus and accomplish it to give it to him, because you love Him and want him to have only the best.

I stay at home with four kids. I homeschool them. I accomplish a ton! And while my wife financially makes the money I would say we support each other.

Perhaps you should focus on doing what you are doing now well.

Though I doubt you meant it to be. Your post was insulting. Not just to you, but to the millions of people who take care of children.

Why don’t you look around your area for some good self development courses or mens support groups. You have to stop with these childish yelling, stamping type posts. If that’s how you act at home… man that is pretty unattractive. Monday morning, get on the net and look for some organisation to start yourself on a path of growth and better things. Do you really think there is any benefit in wallowing in self pity like this? My husband constantly reminds my sons to do at least one thing every day to better yourself and it really is a good way to change your mindset as well as improve yourself.

I got back from the ministry that helps feed the less fortunate. It was a blessing and an eye opener. It’s humbling to think Jesus said “when you have done it to the least of these you have done it unto me…” God bless those people. However, all along I was thinking to myself “you’re one wife away from being homeless like these people.” I have serious issues. I have to come to terms with them. We are going for marriage therapy now. Besides our marriage I really have to come to terms with MY ISSUES.

Why did you capitalize “my issues”? Are you trying to convey something?

One wife away from being homeless? What a weird statement. I think that is telling about your problems with introspection. Do you know that many people are a spouse that does not earn money? Your view of yourself is not logical.

I wish you well and hope you get the help you need.

As for me saying “I am one wife away from being homeless” i’m just going by what other men have told me. And it’s really totally logical. I a seeing life for what it is.
As for getting help, I am trying to pray and attend Mass as much as I can. I admit I don’t pray as much as I should. I have to pray more. And we are FINALLY going for marriage counseling.

At least it looks like you’re moving in the right direction. Marriage counseling may be a really good thing. And don’t discount what you may hear from other sources. I mean, like a job. When I worked, two of my jobs I heard about by word of mouth. And both of them were great, but only temporary. They kept me in the loop.

Should all women who stay at home see their life that way?

You are illogically thinking about this.

Perhaps you wife could get some life insurance.

I wake up 4:25Am. My sleep apnea coupled with my worried state of mind wake me once again. I can’t believe I am in my 50s. I just can’t believe it! I have been out of work so long! I am not bringing income for my family. Who am I anymore? An Protestant friend told me, yesterday, sometimes we just have to say to ourselves this is where God wants me right now. I suppose so. I just hope there is something I can be busy with in future days.

It just occurred to me. I put my yearning for success and money before God! I would be lying if I didn’t admit that success came first!! Success has been an idol in my life. Perhaps it is till is! Maybe this is why I am where I am! Maybe it’s out of God’s love he is bringing me to himself with no success in life!
