i like to pray for the holy souls in purgatory and i was wondering apart from “purgatory” prayers can i offer up regular prayers for them too…

can i offer prayers like spiritual communion prayers, and memorares?..

and what about praying a bunch of ejaculatory prayers and offering the prayers for them? (i know we can ofer the indulgences but can we offer up the ejaculatory prayers themselves?),

is there any prayers that we cant offer up for the holy souls? …

plus i wanted to offer up the prayers works joys and sufferings of this day plus everything else of this day i can offer to god…for the holy souls in purgatory…but i want to extend that offering by also offering all my prayers, works, joys, sufferings and everything else i can offer to god, from my very 1st breath till my last breath…can i do that?

anybody else devoted to the holy souls who wants to share any prayers or devotions or stories with me here or by pm then feel free!!!

also here is a fantastic website that gives me so much inspiration and encouragement to help the holy souls in purgatory…hope you enjoy reading it as much as i do

Great post.

Yes. You can offer any prayer, any sacrifice, any renunciation, any work well done, any act of charity, or thanks, or faith…

for any reason.

Offerings are merely ways of uniting ourselves with God.

I offer periods of work for souls in purgatory, and for my family, and for the people in Japan, and for my past sins, and all sorts of intentions. I sometimes offer each foot step for the unborn…

I also offer vocal prayers for such things.

The Holy Souls are part of the Body of Christ, therefore you can offer up any sacrifices and prayers on their behalf, including private Mass intentions or intentions of your Holy Communion or make an offering in the morning of all your sufferings of the day for them. When I say grace before meals, I add a prayer for the Holy Souls. It keeps me praying for them and also reminds me that even as I eat to preserve life, I must still keep a memento mori.

Pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory!

so if i said for e.g a short prayer 3 times…jesus have mercy on the people in japan and help them…even though this prayer is about the people of japan, could i say to god i want to offer it up for the holy souls?

I am sorry but I have to ask this question:

Do you want to get out multiple effects from your one minute spent on prayers – or you want to restrict the prayer value given to the Japanese people and donate part of it to the souls in the purgatory?

Our prayers in itself worth as much as our time and energy invested into that. The prayer for the Japanese people is worthy because it strengthens the global solidarity with them, that conforms God’s will, and in response brings down God’s grace.

The indulgences are significantly more worthy, because they through the will off the Church are using the power of all the prayers and merits since the beginning of the Church.

Overall we do not know the mechanism how the prayers work.

I think there’s a danger in overly measuring and proportioning our intent in prayer.

The goal is unity with God. More moments per day in union with Him. We struggle to pray more and more…by converting all moments into prayer. Our work, our travel time, our diaper changing.

I was told to strive for utter simplicity (“Lord for all those people on my A list; the list is not handy but you know who is on that list”).

“Father I would like to offer this prayer (this renunciation, this sacrifice, this act of penance, this work period) for all the people in China and all unborn mothers. I don’t want to be greedy Father, but this is what I am hoping for…if it’s your will, if it pleases you.”

That kind of thing.

God can sort it out…and he can also do the multiplication of “loaves” for us.

So don’t feel like it’s your action as much as your pure desire to trust, and to be humble and to please Him. If we really think it’s our action that’s doing the work…then we start getting into all sorts of “calculation” games.

And then I always return to the “utter simplicity” guidance I was given by a very good priest.
