My old church membership

This past Saturday, I was confirmed into The Church, and it is such a blessing in my life.

My question is, what do I do now with the membership at my old Baptist church? Since I produced a baptism certificate, I doubt my parish contacted my old church. I’d rather not have my name on the books there, not because of any malice, but I just don’t want to give the wrong impression that I still worship with those wonderful people.

Do I just call and ask them to move it, leave it to my parish, or what?

Why not contact the pastor and just tell him that you have become Catholic and let him do what he wants with his church registry? It seems that you have affection for your old church and might like to keep getting any bulletins or stay up with the happenings there, weddings, births, deaths, general news. There is nothing wrong with maintaining contact and friendships if that is possible.

There is nothing wrong with maintaining contact with one’s old church…unless it is a detriment to one’s Catholic faith.

I say that only because I’d be very concerned about the guilt trips and renewed efforts of evangelization from one’s old church.

celticsfan, if you’re secure enough, then just calling the pastor to be removed from therolls should be fine. I’m sure he’d tell you if there’s anything more you needed to do.

we do not notify the baptismal parish of Confirmation and First Communion if the individual was baptized in another Christian denomination. The fact of their profession of faith and reception into full communion, with the details of the baptism, are entered in the new parish sacramental records. This is to avoid the appearance of triumphalism. If you left this congregation on good terms it would be appropriate to let the pastor know of your new status. If you membership in the other church will lead to frequent contacts, tithing appeals etc, that are unwelcome to you, simply call their office and asked to be removed from membership.
